Austria: Glacier skiing in Hintertux

Published: 10.3.2008
Winter season in this year is, however, too mild, and not too favourable for skiing. You have to look for the snow and skiing possibilities abroad where the conditions for your activities are more favouirable as in Czech Republic. This time, you travel to Hintertux skiing centre, 550 kms distant, on border of Austria and Italy.

Provided you wish to try so called „glacier skiing“ you have to visit this winter sports-centre. We mention the most extended glacier in Hintertux (Austria) - named as a King between glaciers. All year round operation is a standard with universal offer of slopes, where the amateurs as well as experienced sportsmen find their best.

Everlasting snow covers several peaks and terrains, where protrudes majestic mountain named Gefrorene Wand is situated. It is an ideal terrain for experienced skiiers, especially for professional teams for training. However, as a consequence of it, the space is smaller for public skiiers, on main slalom slope. You meet very often here the crowds of skiiers during summer months, you find the queues at ski-towages and other unpleasant  scenes. Anyway, on the contrary, you can visit opposite slopes and mountain of Olperer and Kaserer, the slopes of which are better for calm carving procedures. The conditions for skiing are really excellent, as a problem remains this season´s traffic on slopes, as Tux serves as a security, provided there would be lack of snow in other valleys of extended Zillertal 3000 valley. The traffic axis of this glacier centre is formed with three sections  and cabin funicolars  of big capacity. First starts at parking in Hintertux upstairs to Sommerbergalm (2100m). From here, the other funicolar (cabin for 24 persons), secured with double draught rope, resistant to glacier wind over 100 kms/h, arises. From change-station Fernerhaus (2660 m) you can continue with two-places funicolar reach the slopes places under Gefrorene Wand. Paths near to this point offer various combinations od descent routes to the first change-station (to Sommerbergalm) Red and blue descent lines offer just mentioned slope of Olperer, the operation of which is secured by classical anchors. The professionals name these slopes as „Highways“, but it is not true.

This glacier area offers also freeride activity - in a form of reserved routes in powder-snow. Freeride is a legal activity in Austria, it can be done under sever safety conditions, and you have to  be quite experienced, of course. As to snowboardists: you will be pleased with highest European Half Pipe. You will be satisfied with the possibility of romantic winter walks. Glacier-outskirts offers 250 kms of walking tours. It is obvious that you are not able to walk through all paths during one 10-days´ holiday.  Anyway, similar situation is in summer, you can walk more but again, you cannot see all during short holiday, and you have to return again!

As to ski-beginners: you have wide possibility to obtaine more experience on blue slopes under Tux Joch (2460 m). Here, leads express four-places wire-rope-way from Sommerbergalm. We recommend you final descent to the valley  along 5 kms-long route Schwarze Pfanne, alluring to safe freeride short ways.

We trust that you will choice from the offer presented, in spite of waiting in queues but this is sufficient, owing to the comfort offered.
