Austria: 300th Anniversary of the Birth of Maria Theresa

Published: 7.5.2017
It has been 300 years already since Maria Theresa was born. She was a ruler which tremendously influenced Central Europe. Our neighbors set up four exhibitions in Wien and Low Austria to explore her as a strategist, mother, sovereign, and reformist.

Before we start off walking through the amazing exhibition, let's learn something about Maria Therese. She was born on May 13, 1717 in Wien. Back then there was no indice that she would become one of the most important figures in European history one day. The Pragmatic sanction was the way her father ensured her ascension to the throne. Yet to become truly respected soverign meant that she would fight for here position long years to come. Unfortunately, her rule was the time of sever wars as well.

She ruled the empire for 40 years. Sometimes they called "the mother-in-law of Europe" (thanks to her marriage policy). There were many was, lots of suffering, intoleration during her years on the throne. But these years were also the years of modernization, reforms, and flourishing of art. Governmental administraiton, taxes, school education, universities, or army all underwent reforms which layed out the ground work of the modern state as we know it. However, her moral opinions were far away from the enlightement typical for the era. Her interest in arts and need to create representative structures ended up in construction of such masterpieces as Schönbrunn chateau or  Schloss Hof, a royal rural residence.

And now we seamlessly start with the  exhibition 300th Anniversary of Maria Theresa - A Strategist, Mother, Reformist. The exhibition explores not only the success of the soverign but also her flaws.
