Bosnia and Hercegovina – Trip to Kravica Waterfalls

Published: 13.6.2023
The following day morning, we departed Mostar for the place we were looking forward to the most. It is situated close to the Croatian border. We visited the place of beautiful Kravica waterfalls.

We depart Mostar by following the main road towards Žitomislić, the home of beautiful orthodox cloister finished in 1566. The cloister was destroyed during the war time. In 2002, it was renewed to its original looks. At Žitomislić we turn to Čitluk. However, our map is not accurate as we reach Čitluk almost right after we made a turn according to our GPS. In reality, we were still few kilometers away from the right town of Čitluk. Along steep hairpin turn road we enjoyed splendid vista over the surrounding mountainous landscape.

When we left Čitluk we moved to Ljubuški. Yet we made a turn just before the town. Even the map is not accurate we could navigate by brown tourist direction boards which led us to our destination. Should you have more time on your hands, you can make the trip longer and walk through the town of Ljubuški. The place is known for its vineyards as wine thrives in the seaside region. Also, the ruins of Butorovice castle of the late 14th early 15th century may be added to your travel itineary.

There is a large parking lot right in front of the entrance to the area with the waterfalls. Entrance to the waterfalls is for a fee, although we read in our guide that it should be free. One can see that there are still construction works around to make the compound suitable for tourists – even a new tourist trail was constructed here. It runs to the waterfalls and is lined with several nice outlooks. There are plenty of clean toilts. Restaurants and cafes are available by the waterfalls. Therefore, the entrance fee is appropriate. In 10 to 15 minutes we descend to the waterfalls yet you can ride a tourist train with a return ticket.

Kravice waterfalls on the Trebizat river are 28 meters high and almost 100 meters wide. This is very popular and frequented place. An azure, crystal clear lake is rich on fish. You can take a swim there and swim to the waterfalls. As the lake is very cold, it provides nice refreshment in hot months of summer.

As we reach the waterfalls quite early in the morning, the entire compound is basically empty. Tourist on buses come and crowd the place shortly after ten o'clock when they depart Mostar. Should you intend to travel by car in Bosně a Hercegovině, it would be a pity if you overslept in the morning.

Upon bathing and snack, we went to another part of the compound we had no idea about before. About one kilometer from the main waterfalls, there are smaller waterfalls – Mala Kravica. Then, along beaten pathway following the Trebizat River we went on until we reached a number of steep waterfalls among the fig trees. Here you can rent a catamaran. From the other end of the path we get back to the parking lot and pass by a tourist train merrily honking in the distance.

Only kilometers away from Kravica waterfalls, there is a well known tourist point of interest. This one is a Medjugorje catholic place of pilgrimage. It is a town situated in the mountains of Bosnia and Hercegovina. The city is not particularly interesting by itself yet there was alleged sighting of the Virgin Mary on Podbrdo hill. Huge number of people streaming to this town every year changed this place and crowded it with hotels. As this place is rather for the believers, we moved to another place more interesting to us – Hutovo Blato nature park.

Otherwise you could make your drive much longer.

Our journey in Bosnia and Hercegovina is coming to an end with the last day upon us. We plane to leave Sarajevo for Tuzla which is the site of the airport. Before taking off we want to refresh ourselves. The hottest day of our vacation is upon us. However, there is one more place close to Sarajevo which we want to see. This is the remains of once a bobsleigh track used for XIV Winter Olympis in 1984. Then the games took place in Yugoslavia. The trakc is located in the Trebevic mountain range southeast from Sarajevo on Jahorina mountain. The track was severely damaged during the war and mines were laid around. The remains of the track have been frequented by tourists lately. It is rather now a war memorial than a place which would be a memorial to the Olympics.

Approximately 25 kilometres southwest of Mostar is the town of Medjugorie, a town of more than 2,000 people, which until the 1980s was unknown to many. Everything changed on June 24, 1981, when the Virgin Mary appeared, transforming a simple town into one of the most important and most visited pilgrimage sites in the world.
