Croatia – Kornati National Park

Published: 29.4.2018
Before a journey to the national park we tried diferent travel agencies and compared what they offer and choose one of them. The town of Murter was the point of start. We sailed off from there.

You can't buy a seat in a boat. Moreover, you can reach the port only across a draw bridge which opens at certain time. I recommend you to get up early, skip breakfast and set out soon after 7 o'clock. Leave your car near the port and then board the boat.

There are about 150 islands and islets in the area. 89 of them are protected. Most of the islands are uninhabited and the park itself covers an area of  217 km2. The reserve bears name of the largest of islands – Kornat. It is one of the few with lush vegetation. Majority islands are bare and covered in stone. Locals used the islands to graze their herds in the past. They cut down trees, burned bushes and seeded grass. Stone walls split the land and laid borders to paddocks. For long years, animals ate grass. Now only bare land has been left of it. Somewhere you may spot a house or two with a barn and outdoor fireplace. Inside ,there is usually a shepherd making fresh cheese.

The cruise is quiet. We pass several steep cliffs. The highest ones are Klobucar (82 m) or Mana (68 m). Some rocks fall deep into the see. The deepest one is 92 meters below the sea level. Our boat is heading to the third largest island – Levrnaka. It smells beautiful everywhere. Lunch is being served on the boat. For quite some time a flock of seagulls follows us. They know what to expect. The cook and some tourists feed seagulls with rests from lunch. A bottle of table wine is part of this feast. We sit for a while and then head to the island. There are basically two ways how to make use of time. Either you can climb Veli Vrh to enjoy amazing vistas over Kornati archipelago or go on to a pebble beach to enjoy crystal clear water.

Divers also like the national park. Fishing is absolutely forbidden in the reserve. It was declared a national park also to protect local fauna and flora.
