Malaysia: Borneo, Sabah: Kota Kinabalu – Wooden Atkinson Clock Tower and Mosque

Published: 26.5.2018
One of the most prestigious sights in Kota Kinabalu stands on a prominent spot along the road to Signal Hill. This whole-wooden structure was built to commemorate Francis George Atkinson, the first district officer of Jesselton during the British administration of Borneo.

This clock tower is the oldest permanent building in the whole of Sabah, surviving the destruction of the city of Jesselton during the retreat of Allied forces during the WWII. To this day, it still serves to show time. It is within walking distance of almost all the cities of Kota Kinabalu. The Atkinson Clock Tower is surrounded by a fence and can be visited at any time, beautifully lit at night.

Signal Hill, the highest place in the city, is one of the best sites to enjoy the view of Kota Kinabalu. Just a few minutes drive from Padang Merdeka, it takes you almost to the skies from where you can enjoy the view of Kota Kinabalu. But don't overlook the remote islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Park.

The Signal Hill Observatory is located on a small hill called "Bukit Bendera" in the city center. There are two ways to get there. You can either catch a taxi or walk if you think you are fit enough to climb wooden stairs with an elevation of 250 meters. The sign of the Signal Hill Observatory is lined with railing. On the way you can see interesting trees and flowers. The starting point of this trail is Dewan Masyaraka. At the end, there is a cozy café. If you order something good, you can also watch the city of Kota Kinabalu as it spread right in front of your eyes. When you listen in silence, exotic birds are singing to your coffee. Signal Hill Observatory is open from 8am to 12pm. Admission is free.

City Mosque

The city mosque in Kota Kinabalu stands on an area of 2.47 acres in Likas Bay. It is a great example of contemporary Islamic architecture. This majestic white mosque boasts similar features as the Nabawi Mosque in Medina. It takes up to 9,000 people at once. It is the largest mosque in Kota Kinabalu. It is referred to as the most beautiful in Malaysia. The artificially created lagoon that surrounds it provides a magnificent view of the mosque at night full moon.

It is open for public visits daily except Friday from 8am to 5pm. It is necessary to think of appropriate clothing, as Islamic rules apply here. Admission is free.
