General Information

The Dominican Republic is a state, situated in Caribbean Sea, placed in east part of Hispaniola Island, in Great Antilles group of islands. The state of  Haiti is the only neighbouring country, the common frontier makes 388 kilometrs.

Most of Dominican Republic territory is covered with mountain ranges. The highest peak, named as Pico Duarte, is 3087 metres high. The plain-lands are passing along the coasts.

The climate is humid and tropical. The average temperatures move from 16 °C up to 30 °C. Yearly precipitation is moving in a scale from 1000 mm up to 2000 mm. The Dominican Republic is placed in an area, where hourricans prevail.

Three great ethnical groups dominate in the island. The Mulattos form 73%, white men 16%, and negroes 11% of total population.

As an interesting fact, it could be mentioned, that Christoph Columbus was the first European who entered the territory of future Dominican Republic on 6th December 1492. He named the coutry as a „Paradise on the Earth“.
