The safety situation is relatively good in capital as well as in an important tourist localities (Tikal, etc). On the other hand, in other localities, especially in border areas with Mexico, the risks of attacks are high (criminal gangs are operating there – such as: Salva Truchas). So, especially the individuals, are not recommended to visit such areas.
As far as the health risk is concerned, there is a danger of malaria appearance (mainly in swampy area in the north). Regarding vaccination: you would be vaccinated against hepatitide A/B.
Attention: there is very dangerous to take photos in several places (first of all among Indian population). Recently, it happened that the tourists were physically assaulted by village inhabitants. So, you are requested, to ask always in advance for the permission the photographed person or an owner of photographed object. Moreover, you have to pay for such permission.
