Italy, Ostia – The Wind of History

Published: 30.3.2018
Spring seems to be a distant dream. Maybe it is worth traveling somewhere where it is warm. Therefore, we chose the town of Ostia to be the place of our article for today. In the past, the town was known as Rome's most important port. It is situated close from the Tyrrhean Sea. Now the town features the second largest excavation site in Italy.

Ostia is to be found an hour of car ride from Rome, a train ride takes about the same time. Home to over 85 thousand people, the town is mostly sought after in summer bypříchod do města Romans.

In our article however, we are not interested as much in the town itself as in Ostia Antica, its ancient ruins. The name of the town comes from the Roman word of "os" - "mouth" which referred to town's location at the mouth of the River Tiber. Ostia, also, has been described as Rome's first colony allegedly founded by the fourth king of Rome Ancus Marcius in the 7th century BCE. The oldest known evidence dates back to only 4th century BCE. The oldest buildings are from the 3rd century BCE.

Capitol is one of the most important sights in Ostia Antica. Once the center of religious life the structure stands elevated above its surroundings. It is really hard to miss as it is the only antique structure left standing above ground. Forum also played a central role to life in the town. Here two main arteries crossed, that is Decumanus and Cardo Maximus. On the south edge of Forum, there is the Roma and Augustus temple from the 1st century AD. West from Forum, there is the 3rd century rotunda resembling the Pantheon in Rome.

Like any other Roman town, Ostia too had baths. The Baths of Neptune like other baths all over the empire featured richly decorated mosaic floor with the motives of dolhpines, fish, memaids, and Neptune. Inside you may also see local heating system which kept desired temperatures in the different sections of the baths.

Amphitheaters played important role for social life in the Roman Empire. Ostia's amphitheater is situated right next to the Neptune's baths. Local amphitheater was built in the times of Emperor Augustus. It could contain up to 3 thousand spectators. The upper rows gives magnificent vista over the entire area.

Italy, Rome – An Off-Season Trip I
Published: 11.5.2022
We were pondering if winter or early spring are suitable seasons for a stay in Rome. It turned out, it was a great choice. It is off main season, therefore accommodation, and flight tickets are notably cheaper. There are also lesser tourist crowds (yet in Vatican or at the main train station there are still many people there). Moreover, the weather is amazing. It was bit frosty in the morning but as the day goes on, the sun is more powerful. Temparatures then rise up to 18 °C so we wore just sweaters (some even wore T-shirts and shorts).

We were about to stay five days in Rome. So we intended to make some trips around Rome. We received some advice at the visitor's center which led us to visit the town of Cerveteri. The town is situated in the Lazio region about 40 kilometers from Rome. It takes us about an hour by train to reach Marina di Cerveteri station (the train departs several times every day from Roma Termini station). Then you need to reach a bus stop (100 from the train station). A free of charge minibus departs from here to the historic center of Cerveteri (to Piazza Aldo Moro). The ride takes about 20 minutes.

Italy, Around Rome – Frascati a Ostia Antica
Published: 6.4.2017
The last day in Rome was the perfect day for a trip off the city. We visited two different places. After Villa d‘Este we decided to set off to Frascati. There is Villa Aldobrandini. Frascati is situated 20 kilometers southeast of Rome. A train departs from roma Termini to here regularly. The ride takes half an hour. But bear in mind that the train departs from a pretty remote platform. So don't go to the train station at the last minute.

Italy, Rome's Surroundings – Visit to Tivoli (Villa d'Este, Villa Adriana)

We decided to leave Rome on Sunday for Tivoli, a town about 40 kilometers away. Formerly, this was a place where Rome's rich went to recreate because they had their summer residence there. Today, tourists are most intrigued to visit the magnificent Renaissance villa – Villa d'Este.
