Austria – Winter Vacation in the Region of Salzburg
Salzburg
Snow-covered Salzburg is perhaps even more beautiful than in the summer. The old town and the castle are on the UNESCO list and everything is all together so that you will find the most beautiful and interesting on foot.
Start at the fortress of Hohensalzburg, where you can get by the cable car. The royal chambers and the castle museum can be seen in the fort. Once you get back to the Old Town, you can explore the Salzburg Cathedral or the Franciscan Church. The real treat is a visit St. Peter's monastery with a historic cemetery, church and catacombs inside the Monk mountain.
Salzburg is the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and all of the windows will show you Mozart's souvenirs. If you have a relationship with Amade, you should definitely visit his birthplace in the most famous alley of the Old Town, Getreidegasse.
Do you still have time and strength? Behind the Salzach River visitors welcome Mirabell Castle. It is surrounded by a beautiful garden with a valuable fountain and original sculptures. Who does not have a picture of a stone dwarf in his Instagram, as if he was not in Salzburg.
Beautiful panoramic photos of the whole town can be taken from the peak of Untersberg, where you can also take the cable car.

The city is beautiful, photogenic and its attractiveness will entertain you for the whole week. It is a good idea to stay here and go for a winter sport.
Where to On Ski
Approximately 50 km from Salzburg to the southeast, the Dachstein mountain begins to rise and one ski resort alternates. For example, you can live in Salzburg and use the free shuttle bus to the "Snow Space Salzburg" in Flachau. This ski area features 120 slopes, upgraded chairlifts and, of course, artificial snow to provide snow from December to March.
Ice-Skates
The offer of winter sports will expand if it really gets cold. Around Lake Salzburg you will find a number of lakes, where you will be spoiled by the well-kept natural ice. Lake Zeller See is also celebrated, and Irrsee is also regularly kept free of curling. Night skating can be enjoyed in the artificially illuminated lake Ritzensee near Saalfelden - Leogang, where you can ice-skate up to 22 hours. You do not have your own skates, you can always borrow them.
Cross-Country Skiing
Every winter in Salzburg, hundreds of kilometers of well-maintained cross-country skiing routes are covered. But if we only recommend one, it will be the Faistenau track. More than 60 km, adapted for classic and skating, is crowned by a 5 km long illuminated night trail. Here you are not limiting daylight, you can run daily up to 21 hrs. Skiers also appreciate enough parking spaces.
On Snow-Rackets to IGloos
Those who are physically fit and looking for unusual experiences will enjoy the snowshoe trip. The snowflakes outside the modified tracks are usually organized with a guide. You will always have to offer them in the tourist information center in each ski area. A top experience will be at Fuschlsee where snowshoe hikes are taking place in the moonlight or longer hills where they spend their nights in an igloo.
