Austria, Dachstein: Mountain Giant – The Northewestern Part of the Massif
If you go to the lake from the east, you are going to pass Hinterer Gosausee. Then you go to the mountain cabin. Couple of hours later (ca. 3) you will reach it. Adamek Hütte is open only during prolonged summer. About 100 people can be accommodated there at once. One of its pluses is that it has its own restaurant, however, it is not one of the ceapest ones. The price per night is in the range between 10–28 €. It is important to book your place in advance during the season.
When you set off from the cabin you go southeast across Gosaugletscher glacier. Unfortunately, due to bad weather conditions a Czech climber died there recently. These unhappy events make you realize that you have to take local weather conditions seriously. One also shouldn't overestimate his capabilities and equipment (a rope, ice axe, crampons, and helmet is necessary equipment).
The glacier is unpredictable. It can be always moving. Cracks which must be unimaginably deep on some places will remind you of this. The morning lcimb uses to be more pleasant. The snow is still firm under your feet. As the sun gets hihger in the sky, snow becomes less table. There are also less clouds around the summit in the morning. Thick clouds roll in from the south in the afternoon. Therefore, you can hardly get any view of the surrounding landscape.
To explore the massif of Dachstein you can set off also when going from the north. More concretely from the town of Hallstatt which belongs to the UNESCO list. It is very long way which goes slightly uphill. It goes across Waldbach valley and along the waterfalls. Then it goes to the south passing Wiesberg Hütte cabin. After several hours of walk you will reach Simony Hütte. There you can buy some snack or sleep over in common bedrooms. On the following day, you can rent some climbing equipment and then set off for an adventure across Hallstatter Gletscher. Other option would be to walk along the northern part of the massif. Also, you can go to Adamek Hütte (6 hours of walk) situated in higher altittude.
Take a good inght sleeps. Set off to the glacier and Hoher Dachstein tomorrow. Beautiful panoramas of lakes and glaciers are amazing.
