Small and Grate Kotelní Jámy (Kettle Holes)
Published: 28.2.2008
This dominanta of Giant Mountains is situated in northwestern direction of Horní Mísečky community. Kotel (Kettle) peak is 1435 m high, and it is a dominion of ice, snow and wild wind. This protected area created by glacier formations is placed in the first belt of National Park, at southern and southeastern slope of Kotel.

Great Kettle Hole is scooped in granite, Small  Kettle Hole in mica-slate. The holes are divided by Liščí hřebínek (Fox´s Comb). Small Kettle Hole is higher in comparison to Great one, but it is more narrow. This locality can be reached on tourist trail from Horní Mísečky to Dvoračky. This route leads through Kettle Holes. If you go from Horní Mísečky to Vrbatova bouda (Vrbata Cottage), you will have marvellous view to Kotel (Kettle) and Kotelní jámy (Kettle Holes). The name Vrbatova bouda comes as a memory to ski-runners – Bohumil Hanč and Václav Vrbata, who died here on 24th March 1913, in consequence of violent weather change during 50 kms ski-run.

If you go via Kotel to Dvoračky, would you have a stop at Harrach Stones, you pass it, and have a watch downstars to the valley. The view is wonderful and will be interesting for any courageous skier. Attention, however, you are situated in avalanche cadastre, you have to be always on the guard, and do not underestaimate the nature!

Unfortunately, several people paid their ill-consideration with their lives. The avalanches are frmed from great snowdrifts, created on channel-edges. These snowdrifts are formed of prevailing northwestern winds. The termination fields of avalanches can be seen on vegetation surrounded. It is visible especially on surrounded pine-tree forest, its line finishes on sides, far above the way, whereas its upper border in Kotelní jámy is placed deeply below.

This fact proves the destructive power of avalanches, these can reach here the spedd of even 75m/sec., in avalanche-front there is a pressure reaching 0,5-5 Mpa. This enormous power sweeps away everything which stands in its way. It often happens that this base avalanche tears off the basement including vegetace. Anyway, the slopes do not remain plain, calm places of glacier formations of Kotelní jámy are renowned with a fact the nearly 300 sorts of plants grow here, This locality belongs to richest areas of Giant Mountains, from natural point of view.
