Ochtinska aragonite cave
The cave was discovered in 1954. It is located near to the community of Ochtina, in western direction from the town of Rožňava.
The sediments, formed in characteristic formations, similar to gigantic hedgehogs, are very impressive. These formations were established in other way as standard stalactites, not by penetration of surface water. Owing to high air humidity, which predominated in a cave, so, the crystallization of carbonate of limestone into calcareous solutions could be effected, the crystals of which look like hoar-frost. Ochtinska Aragonite Cave is written into UNESCO World Nature Heritage Survey.
Just nearby south edge of Slovak Ore Mountains, there are to be found extended table-lands of quite different structure as neighbouring hills. It is a part of National Park Slovak Karst. So, central position have two plains (table-lands) in an altitude of 500 metres above valleys´ level. In dolomite and Secondary formation of limestone areas, there are to be found many karst formations. Various valleys, cavities, fields, rock quarries, chimneys and deep shifts were formed by landslip of cave spaces. Rivers of Slaná and Štítnik cut table-lands with deep furrows. Typical karst copse, bushes and law trees are, in general, a work of man. After removal of all these copse, there were created vast pasture-lands, anyway all area got more karst character and lost its importance from economical point of view.
In south direction from Rožňava, there is located a community of Brzotín, where Slaná river flows into narrow canyon. In Brzotín, there is to be found a castle ruin of 14th century and four curiae of Neo-classice style. Here, there is a seat of Slovak Paradise National Park Administration. In a territory of Slovak Karst, there are to be found seven caves, two of them are open for public. They are Domica and Gombasek Cave, they are quite different from each other. So, Gombasek Cave, one and half kilometres long, was discovered even in 1952. This cave is characteristic with its quill stalactites, many are of two-three meters long. On the other hand, Domica – with its length of 21 kilometres approx. – presents wonderful labyrinth of corridors, halls and subterranean flows, creating here a lake. This cave was known just since 18th century. Since 1919, this cave is extended in territories of two states (Slovakia and Hungary). After foundation of Czechoslovakia, two thirds of total surface remained in Hungary – its name is Aggteleker. Separate part of the cave, located in Slovakia, is known as Domica.
