Frýdlant

The town was established  round 1200, the first written notice comes from 1278, when the dominion bought  Rodolph Biberstein from Přemysl Ottakar II. The inhabitans settled round the river Smědá, the town was fortificated in 14th century. The community was raised to a town officially.

The boasting of a town there is a castle , standing here from  13th century. It is a connection of Middle Age Castle and a Renaissance Castle. Big cylindrical tower and parts of  powerful  fortifications remained from the original Gothic form of the castle. Today, you can see in the castle the collections ofg glass, porcelain and furniture.  In a  picture gallery you can admire the wonderful works of  Baroque masters or a unique collection of pipes.  Within 16th and 19th century the castle was enlarged of several other buildings. 

The Neo-Renaissance Town Hall was established in 1893-1896 acording to plans of an architect Franz Neumann. This building is now seat of Town´s Museum. In 1551 the construction of  St.Cross was finished. This church was  undergoed several reconstructions , so one art-style  is not represented.only.

In Frýdlant there is  also a look-out-tower, having a long history. Round 1890 stood on Ressel Hill over the town a wooden look-out-tower, this had to be  demolished. In 1907 it was substituted by new one, built of  burnt  bricks and granit blocks., 21 m of height. This look-out –tower was open to the public up to 1958, afterthat was used as a TV sender. After  reparation works, re-open for public in 1982.
