Vyšší Brod is a border town, founded at the beginning of 13th century as a Market Place along one of beast of burden paths, leading through pass from Danube to Bohemia just in Roman time-period.

First notice about a town is mentioned in presenting document of 1st June 1259. Here confirms Vok of Rosenberg, founder of monastery, that he gave vast area with one colonized market place of Vyšší Brod. In 1528, Jan III. of Rosenberg, granted a privilege of town´s rights, including seal right, with town´s escutcheon.
Within many centuries, remote town of Vyšší Brod, was protected against war expeditions, on the otherhand, the town suffered from big fires. However, the fires changed in essential way original character of town in 19th century, big changes brought revolutionary year 1848.
Vyšší Brod become executive district office town, since 1868,  there is here a seat of district court. In 1938 (at the beginning of Nazi occupation), border town becomes part of Hitler Third Reich. When Second World  War is over, all German speaking inhabitants had to leave the country, big change of people is in movement.
Vyšší Brod looses its status of executive district office, even looses its nomination as a town.
This title was returned back even on 1st July 1994.
As to local monuments: there is, first of all, Cistercian Monastery, founded  by Vok of Rosenberg in 1259. Here lived the monks of St. Benedictus Order. Monks  transformed with their work the whole countryside. They built a monastery with Gothic Church of Virgin Mary.
You find here big library containing more than 70000 copies of books. This library is the third biggest in Czech Republic.
To most famous monuments belong also Cross of Záviš and Holy Virgin of Vyšší Brod.
However, during Nazi occupation in 1941, the monks had to leave the monastery, and in 1950 the regime closed the monastery totally.
At present, the monastery is inhabited with monks community again.
 
At the neighbourhood of town, you find big camping place at Lipno-Dam. It is starting point for many watermen, for descending of Vltava-river. In outskirts, you find also many tourist trails.
