Velké Meziříčí
The community here existed probably in 11th century, but it is not proved. Around 1236 it was created a castle which is one of the oldest castles in Moravia. In 14th century there was established the suburbs – Upper and Lower Town, Karlov, Vrcholec, Malá Stránka and Bezděkov. in 13th and 14th century the town became a centre of great dominion, involving the area of Meziříčí and Náměšť. After a death of the last owner ,Jan of Meziříčí, new owners were Kravaře Family, subsequently after Lomnice Family.
In 15th and 16th century the town noted the best development. Jan of Pernstejn enforced for a town several privileges , similar as had the King´s towns. The beer cooking and wine retail were allowed. In 17th century the town was devastated by Swedish and descended on a level of servirtude´s town and most of privileges were lost. The handicraft production developed in the second half of 18th century. In 19th century the town was caught with a big fire, the Lobkowicz Family governed in town at that town. In the first half of 20th century became Velké Meziříčí a district town, rich cultural life was here, also several factories were established , however, the further development was stopped.
You can visit local museum, founded in 1893. As an interesting monument is the Fountain with a statue of St. Florian and statue of St.John Nepomuk , situated in the square.
Within 1528-1529 the building of town hall was rebuilt. The town´s autonomy has a seat here up to now.
As to further monuments: it is parish church of St.Nicholas, the first notice comes of 1317, and a castle. The original castle was built in 1230, in 16th century rebuilt in Renaissance style, and in 18th century in Baroque style. Near to the castle you find great park, free open to the public.
