Tovačov
Tovačov is placed in a centre of imaginary square, the tops of which are formed with Olomouc (in north), Přerov (on east), Kroměříž (in south) and Prostějov (on west). Thanks to its important strategic position, the town became, shortly after its foundation, an important crossroad of merchant ways, bound to confluence of Morava and Bečva rivers.
The castle forms a most important monument of the town, no doubt. Originally, it was a castle of Gothic style, built by King Jan Lucembursky in 1321. At the end of 14th century, there was effected great renovation of this building, according to the wish of the o
wner, Ctibor Tovačovsky. William of Pernstein was next owner. He let built eastern wing, including castle defensive system. Further owners (came from the same parentage) reconstructed the castle in Renaissance style. Sal-Neuburg Parentage deserved well in change of castle into Baroque face. However, within 30-years war, the castle was seriously damaged. Anyway, next reconstruction was effected during 19th century, so the castle obtained its actual face. The castle is very diverse, so its separate buldings are of heterogenous character. Castle courtyard is surrounded by four wings, the dominanta of the whole building was made by high tower. It has four-sided ground-plan, and it is changed to eight-sided form in upper floors. In lower parts of the tower, you can see nice portal, leading us to courtyard. Windows with marble casing are presented as Renaissance prove, whereas Baroque time-period is represented by chapel with segment cupola. Many rooms in castle are furnished with barrel and cross vaulted ceiling. Wedding festivities in castle are more and more popular, so many couples take advantage of this chance to do it in Tovačov castle. With castle area, there is connected a walk along so called „castle pier“, bordered with several oaks, hundreds of years old. These trees were planted here just in 16th century, they s
trengthened banks of pond. This place is famous locality, especially for naturalists.
Favourable conditions, in connections with old oak overgrowns, enable the existence of rare and threatened sorts of butterflies, beatles and amphibians. Tovačov becomes more often a target of many visitors and tourists. They have a chance to visit, with the exception of the castle, mentioned above, other important sightseeings. An important historical building of Tovačov is recently reconstructed parish church (there was originally placed here a Gothic church of 1359). Its front portal is richly decorated in an interesting way. Further historical jewel of Tovačov, there is a square founded in 1475, it is one of oldest squares in Czech Republic. The town hall with Renaissance portal in a passage is most valuable historical sightseeing of a square, together with a fountain and St.Wenceslas statue. Further, you can find here also Jewish cemetery with oldest tombs of 1614-1615. The tourists can visit Museum of Jewish Community, enabling Jews history in detailed way. As far as sporting activities are concerned, there are a lot of possibilities available. There are: Football (soccer) playground, yacht club, lawn-tennis courts, sporting hall, and minigolf playground. For dogs, there is a possibility to visit dogs-training ground and, to take a relax in sauna, after a hard day.
