Říp hill
Published: 11.9.2007
The Říp Hill is a National Cultural Monument situated 5 kms in south direction of the town of Roudnice nad Labem. It is basaltic pile, remained from Tertiary formation volcano. Except of other compounds it contains also magnetic iron-ore. This can reflect on the activity of compass magnetic needle. The hill is, thanks to decayed activity, lower as before, its height relates to 455,5 m.

Owing to the fact that the hill is situated in plain countryside, rivets an  attention  time out of mind. The hill is quite important  orientation point. Its name derives from the German word „rip“ what means „hill, elevated point“.

Up to the 19th century Říp was plain hill. At present, nearly all the surface of the hill is covered by forest, formed with hornbeams. You can find the other trees, such as pines, maples, ash-trees and linden-trees. There are to be found rare warm-preferring steppe  grass and plants,  as low iris, appreciated by nature protectors. In 1951 the Říp was declared as State Preserved Reservation.

We do not omit the legend hanging together with this hill. First, at the beginning of 12th century, the hill was noted in chronic of Kosmas. It is bound to the person of Ancestor Čech, who as the first  brought the first Slaves, settled here and gave their new home the name after his  leader. This legend was expanded by Václav Hájek of Libočany. The latest version wrote in 1894 Mr. Alois Jirásek and you find it in Staré pověsti české (Old Czech Legends).

The Říp Hil was very important point for the Czech Nation. The processions came to the top time out of mind, on the top there were taken place many meetings and celebrations. In 1868 there was  broken out the ground-stone from the surface, used afterthat by construction of Nartional Theatre of Prague.

On the highest point of holy hill of Říp there was built the Romanesque rotunda of St.George frorm the year 1126 replaced the original wooden church. It was built on memory of victorian battle of  Prince Soběslav I. on 18th February commanded with German King Lothar. This rotunda is an important artificial work, it proves the high level of Czech architectonical  creation at this time. Since 1963 it was declared as a National Cultural Monument.

Říp Hill - Not Too Worshipped Czech Monument

Říp Hill, quite holy mountain for Czechs, is to be seen for kilometres distance, raising up from moderately undulated countryside. You can mount the top without specially physical efforts. On the other hand, to reach the top by cycle without stop, it is rather problematic.
