Austria: Skiing in the Alps I – Dachstein West, a Village Type Ski Resort
The winter is here but there is not much snow in our country. If you are not satisfied with our pistes covered with artificial snow then go to the Alps.
There are many options for skiing in Austria - many small resorts which are either secluded or part of a bigger whole where you can use one ski pass and use its shuttle service. Some people prefer large ski resorts connected by many cable ways so nobody would lose attraction in it. There are many of such centers. Just pick one. But lets take a look at some.
Dachstein West is located on the northwestern slopes of Dachstein. Russbach is something like an entrance gate to pistes. Right at the main road in Russbach, there is lower station of the cable car of Hornbahn. This one takes you hundreds of elevation meters up and other stop in the village of Gosau where you can hop on the cable car. Panorama Jet Zwieselalm, is a new cable car and a station where you can get on it is at the first car park adjacent to the ice lake Gosausee. The last village within this resort is Annaberg im Lammertal. Free ski busses provide transport from nearby villages and towns like Bad Ischl, Hallstatt and others.
This small ski resort is 6 hours of ride away from Prague. Once there you realize it is like if you were in those perfect mountain posters. And the views of Gosausbach (limestone mountains) and Dachstein, the famous glacier, are truly epic. We certainly like the surroundings of the resort. A one-day ski pass costs 40 euro (in the main season). There are some state of the art cable ways but others are visibly more technically older. You can ride in cable cars, cable ways with seats or ski tows. Unfortunately, Dachstein has no piste of black difficulty. On the other hand there are plentiful red pistes. Just choose the direction you want to ride to and go. Not enough inclination variations is counterweighted by number of snowparks, snowcrosses, bump covered pistes, practice tracks, racing tracks and free style parks. Any visitor can downhill on these.
Cross-country skiers can run on tracks from Gosau village down to Gosau Hintertal. The track ends at a small lake Gosaub. In case you would prefer a valley track you should get to Annaberg. There at Lungötz village are two circuits several dozens of kilometers long.
Where we go skiing next Sunday? Well, this will be a surprise.

If you love skiing and snowboarding and you are not beginners, then go to Kitzsteinhorn. It is a glacier in the Alpes in the Hohe Tauern. Snow is there all year long. Kitzsteinhorn is 3203 meters high and situated to the north from the highest mountain in Austria - Grossglockner.
The northwest of Dachsteinu is characteristic for raising slightly. There are also glaciers. You can’t get to the top no other way than going on your own (there are no cable cars). The western part of Dachstein has only one large mountain cabin Adamek Hütte (2 196 m n. m.), ke které se nejlépe dostanete od Gosausee (10 minutes by car from Gosau village). I tis a beautiful lake great for taking a swim shielded by two thousand meters high mountains in the south.
Der Johann is the king of all Dachstein ferratas (klettersteig). This is thanks to its location, difficulty and the lenght. It easy to access. Red dots mark it all the way. I tis recommended to park your car at the bottom station of the Dachstein Südwandbahn cable car. Once there, set off to the righ along the cables in the direction upwards to Südwand Hütte. You get under the cables when the trail swerves westards. In 40 minutes of walk you get to beautiful stone paved trail. However, you just go around it. By following the directions you will move in the northwest direction and there you board the klettersteig after an hour of walk.
We are at Südwandblick, a resting area at 2510 meters. We have just written our names into the summit book of records. Now we can go on and we are still not at our final destination. Through C/D section we got atop a terrace at high altitude. There you can barely reach rope on the wall separating you from the abyss (if you are not tall). The trail from here is, however, easy. The height however is awesome.
The highest peak of Dachstein is called Hoher Dachstein. It is a massive mountain rising to 2 995 m. You can find it above sleep southern slopes. You can reach the glacier are below the summit either by walking from the northwest (usually from Adamek Hütte and Simony Hütte). You will go along ferratas along the southern slope. Or you can take the Südwandbahn cable car (as we mentioned in our previous articles).
Maintained slopes, snow covered landscape, amazing vistas, mountain air, cozy cabins – all of these are ingrediends for an unforgettable winter vacation.
Dachstein massif can be accessed from any direction. There are many advantages to every of them. The most popular are cable cars (we told you about them in the first part of the series). Dachstein Südwandbahn is a cable car in the south. It takes you almost one kilmoeter up above the clouds in just ten minutes. There is a restaurant at the upper cable car station. You can find it on the top of Hunerkogel mountain.
Autumn is already there in Lower Austria. The autumn is linked with wine. There are over 100 Lower Austrian towns preparing celebrations.
There are many high-quality resorts that attract winter sports enthusiasts. When they offer something extra the beter it is from them. Hintertuxer Gletscher resort, or simply Hintertux, offers something extraordinary.
Austria is a typical mountain country mostly consisting of the Eastern Alps. Austrian Alpine terrain is typical for vast mountain ranges divided by deep valleys and mountains steeply declining to valleys.
Everybody who loves skiing the region of Schladming-Dachstein is the thing. Situated in the heart of Austria (Styria) the region has many events to offer as well as perfect downslopes as well as cross country tracks. But this is hardly everything!
After riding down the slopes around Saalbach we move to mountain Wildenkarkogel’s northern ridge. We follow the directions to Leogang.
Last time we introduced you a family ski resort. Were the red ski slopes not enough for your skiing ambitions and you prefer black ski slopes then move 100 kilometers to the southwest where is the fabulous town of Saalbach (460 km from Prague).
This picturesque town is part of the UNESCO’s world heritage. You can find it in central Austria, in the area called Salzkammergut. This area is lined with high limestone ridges. There are many beautiful lakes.
Alpine air, mountains, lakes, and the peaks of majestic giants, and Dachstein glacier in the background. Such are the moments you can experience at Katrin ferrate that is at the altitude of 1542 meters.
Winter is coming. It means that possibilities for skiing and trips in nature open once again. Join us to take a short trip to Murtal, a paradise for holidaymakers in Styria. Here we would like to present you some of the new things in the region.
It is winter again. The season condemned by many not only for below the zero temperatures or snow, but because of shorter days which makes some people depressed. However, as for me like many other winter sports fans, I am not afraid of below the zero temperatures.
If you belong to fans of winter sports, it is not necessary to reintroduce you to Skicircus resort. It is one of the best ski areal in neighboring Austria
Mitterbach is a small village situated in charming nature, in Federative County of Lower Austria. The visitors from Slovakia as well as from the Czech Republic discover this community again, not only for its position, deep in the nature, rather easy accessibility and good transport connection, but also for many sightseeings and places of interest
in the outskirts.
