CZ: Jaromerice nad Rokytnou – A Versailles in Moravia

Published: 7.9.2017
Famous Versailles in France was example for many other residencies of nobility. The chateau in Jaromerice, dubbed Moravian Versailles, was, aparently, also built with French Versailles in mind. It is no false advertising to bring more tourists to this gem of the Baroque era. Jan Adam of Questenberk really wished to build his own Versailles in Jaromerice. This town was supposed to become cultural center in the region as well as home to culture and muses. Plans were grandiose yet lack of funding allowed only partial fulfilment of Jan Adam's dream. Even though, the chateau really became center of culture and it has remained venue of many important culture events ever since.

Jan Adam of Questenberk was born in Vienna in 1678. In the age of eight he inherited his father's dominion. Once he finished his studies, in the manner typical for the then Baroque noblemen he traveled to the foreing lands, a gentleman's journey. Today we would call it differently. Simply put it was a time when young noblemen were supposed to gain some experience. They learned how other courts function, they studied at foreign universities, and did some networking. Such a stay would last couple of years. During this time, Jan Adam also lived in Paris and he also visited the court of Louis XIV. It amazed him. He decided to rebuilt Jaromerice, the country residence of his choice, in this manner.

The Baroque reconstruction started earlier. However, Jan Adam sought to find the best artists of his time. For instance, Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt is the author of the church of St Margare. Yet researchers are not agreeing one with each other of the authorship. Some consider Jakob Prandtauer to be the author while Hildebrand was only an advisor. Some say Prandtauer only took over Hildebrandt's plan. In any case, this structure is very similar to Hildebrand't most famous work on Bohemian territory which is the church in Jablonne v Podjestedi. Church of St Margaret is a tour on its own. I highly recommend it if you find yourselves in Jaromerice. The Baroque-style section of the church is magnificent. The same applies to amazing decoration.

Jan Adam also loved theater and music. It was said that he was so addicted to Neapolitan opera that he began learning to play lute. Painter Jan Kupecky was painted holding a lute. Jaromerice of Jan Adam's time became alive with culture. There was také milovníkem divadla a hudby. Hudbou Jaroměřice žijí i dnes, kdy zde každé léto probíhá Mezinárodní hudební festival Petra Dvorského a koncert v prostředí zámecké zahrady či v chrámu svaté Markéty je velkým zážitkem.

If you travel here some other time, there are several tours available. One of them changes slightly each year. It is focused on everyday life of the then nobility. This year it looks closer at hunting the game. Also, walk in chateau's garden or visit amazing candy shop at the chateau. It is a training ground for people with mental and/or physical disability. Here they learn how to have a job. Moreover, cakes here are simply amazing, be sure to try Excelsior. It is nothing but phenomennal.

Zacharias‘ of Hradec square in Telc is a gallery of Renaissance architecture with bits of Baroque. Dubbed Moravian Venice, Telc is surrounded by ponds which reached to the town walls. This made the town an unconquerable water fortress. Its historic core has basically preserved its Renaissance looks. When I have learned recently that Lonely Planet declared Brno the least interesting city in the Czech Republic I couldn’t understand. Then I realized that it was good they said it after all. Had crowds of tourists been going there every day as they go to Prague it would soon loose its magic. Brno is a city of universities, fun, culture and many small, lovely places. The turning clock in the shape of a male genitalia from which a small glass ball falls out every hour. Smoking road signs are really to be found only here… New York Times was much more smarter. They put Brno on the list of 52 places where to go in 2016!
