CZ – Kozel Hunting Lodge Near Pilsen

Published: 5.7.2018
In today's article we will introduce a beautiful hunting chateau, which is located in a place that is told a very untraditional reputation. The original name of the castle was Waldschloss, but long time ago the Slavs at the time of the Spring equinox regularly sacrificed in these places a male goat because they hoped to make their gods and a good harvest. The truth of the legend is evidenced by numerous archaeological findings. In later years the name of the castle changed to Kozel (male goat).

Situated in western Bohemia, in the town of Stahlavy, Kozel chateau was built as a rural home to serve the owner (J.V. Cernin) and his guests. Especially at the time when the owners regularly hunted in the forests around the chateau, where the nobility from all Bohemia came to spend time. The building of the chateau is easy to miss, it is a ground-floor building with four wings around a rectangular courtyard.

Kozel Chateau

The chateau, along with the chapel, the riding school, a footman's house and stables lie in a large chateau park, which leads several hiking trails, including the educational trail Okolo Kozlu. It is 2 kilometers long and you will discover various information signs on your walk, which will bring you closer to the surroundings of the castle and its history. If you have children with you, I would definitely recommend asking local people for the legends of the forest elves, which have been told for many generations. There are also benches and gazebos where you can relax, relax and enjoy nature.

Below the castle there is Lopata pond, where you can spend more time with children than you can imagine. In addition to being able to ride on boats and refresh, there are also many ducks and swans who are will patiently wait to get something tasty.

If you would like to feel how nobility lived in the 18th and 19th centuries, then I am sure you will be pleased. The chateau was partly preserved by the original furniture, which creates an idea of hunting lock devices. The National Cultural Commission decided years ago to use sets of monuments from other castles and chateaus to enhance the atmosphere of nobility's lifestyle.

The Castle Riding Hall has been renovated and newly serves as an exhibition hall and a gallery where various social and cultural events are held. There is an exhibition of sculptor Karel Dvorak in the gallery. The chateau chapel is used today as a concert and wedding hall.

And it would be a great shame if you did not visit the neighboring royal castle of Radyne, which is already a ruin today, but it is also a great place for a sightseeing tour including a beautiful view at an altitude of 569 m.

Near Pilsen, in the small town of Plasy, there is a cistercian monastery founded by Vladislav II. In 1421, however, the Hussites burned it down. The Baroque appearance of the monastery and adjacent buildings is the work of the architects Jan Blazej Santini-Aichel and Jean Baptist Mathey, who from 1661 to 1739 led the rebuilding works of the monastery to the form we may see today.
