Lower Austria boasts many historic landmarks, chateaus, castles and cloisters. Many of these open their gates to show off their beautiful Christmas markets.
Grafenegg castle offers majestic Advent atmosphere. Local market has a tradition of 40 years. Christmas-style lit chateau garden offers delicious meals, many cultural events, and hand-crafted products. We hihgly recommend you to pay a visit to the popular market at Schloss Hof which features a Christmas village. Its arcaded courtyart hosts about a hundred Christmas stands offering traditional hand-crafted products, tips for presents, and various delicacies.
Punch, mulled wine, and Christmas presents may be found in Göttweig, a Benedictine abbey. Once you enter you may see various Advent-related products, hand-made goods, Christmas decorations, and a nativity scene. In Seitenstetten abbey you may also enjoy Christmas atmosphere. The abbey is known for local trumpeters and Christmas carollers. Melk abbey takes you back to the past. This abbey is both majestic and beautiful. At schallaburg, you may buy jewelry, ceramics and wood-carved products. Here, you may make your own candles or some thing made of withe. In case you wish to feel as if in a Christmas fairy tale, go to Rosenburg chateau's Christmas market. Its decoration and lighting is splendid. No wonder, it is dubbed the most romantic Christmas market in Lower Austria.
A mere hour of car ride from Vienna, you may experience beautiful environment in nature, at a chateau situated in the Vienna Alps, with Christmas animals. This all is situated in Johannesbachklamm gorge close to Würflach. In the Advent season, the gorge is beautifully lit by the largest Christmas tree in Austria. A huge larger-than-life table, huge presents, and 6 meter long ski go well together with this large tree.
If you are looking for a Christmas market where children will have fun too, there is a Children Advent in Hohe Wand nature reserve. In this zoo you may see lamas, feed deer, or ride in a horse carriage. There is a fireplace in the middle of market stands. Many activities for children take place during the market. Last but not least, we highly recommend you to visit Reichenau chateau. One of the largest Christmas markets in the Vienna Alps.
Bright Christmas in Mostviertel, craftsman markets markets in Waldviertel region
The Bright Christmas is an initiative bych six Mostviertel Christmas markets. This cooperation brings a diverse program across four weeks of Advent. The markets are situated in the villages of Waidhofen an der Ybbs, Ybbsitz, Gaming, Neubruck, St. Peter in der Au, an Seitenstetten. Smithery and traditional apple juice production is the overarching theme of the markets.
Apart from warm beverages and special Christmas meals you may get warmer by observing smith workshops typical in the region. Also, the Ybbsitz Christmas is a wonderful experience for many as here you may see the smallest pincers in the world and a badge as small as a finger nail. Both curiosities are listend in Guiness' World Record Book.
Should you be on search for original presents, try your lack in Waldviertel region konwn for its long tradition of crafts by potters, smiths, basket-makers, glass makers, and many more.
Markets in wine streets
Traditional Advent markets belong among the greatest attractions in Lower Austria. Streets veiled in enchanting atmosphere, wnie cellars, and people celebrating the Advent season. In Hadres Advent market, there is the longest roofed wine street in Europe. Among things offered there are meals and beverages of local production as well as home-made products. Christmas-style wine cellar which seems to have no end is lined by huge barrels, delicious food, and children attractions.
In a quiant wine street in Wolkersdorf everything resembles a romantic movie. Cozy stands, vendors in cellars, and locals selling their home-made delicacies. Such a beautiful Advent in wine cellar wrapped in Christmas atmosphere you may exprience in the town of Retz.
