CZ: Brno – The Most Entertaining City in Czechia When You Know Where to Go... I – VIDEO

Published: 7.6.2016
When I have learned recently that Lonely Planet declared Brno the least interesting city in the Czech Republic I couldn’t understand. Then I realized that it was good they said it after all. Had crowds of tourists been going there every day as they go to Prague it would soon loose its magic. Brno is a city of universities, fun, culture and many small, lovely places. The turning clock in the shape of a male genitalia from which a small glass ball falls out every hour. Smoking road signs are really to be found only here… New York Times was much more smarter. They put Brno on the list of 52 places where to go in 2016!

Before we go to walk through Brno you should know that the city is amazing place to start trips to the surroundings. There are countless beautiful places. In the Moravsky Kras, there is the famous Macocha abby. However, there are other places such as Krtiny, Tisnov, Rosice, Hrusovany, CHKO Palava and the entire wine-growing region. IT has its own magic and coutless of wine cellars. It is difficult to leave them... We could go and on. But this we leave for another time.

St Peter and Paul cathedral

Its 400 thousand inhabitants make it the second largest city in the České republiky and it is also the capital of Moravia. Thanks its two major universities - Masaryk and Mendel – the city is popular among students. Not just the Czech students, however. There are many Sovaks as well. Every year over one hundred thousand of them come here.

Joštova ulice - zastávka Česká kostel J. A. Komenského

Erasmus students account for thousands as well. Global IT companies have their offices there, for instance IBM. Even very promising projects of Czech origin such as AVG and Zoner started here.

This mix makes Brno as it is. It is vibrant, open and international. There is enough capital for interesting projects and many excited young people who have enough time to bring such projects into life. There are many new cafes, bars and restaurants being opened all the time. They give the city bulk of its great atmosphere. The best about this? You don’t have to go too far from downtown...

Masaryk University St Michael church Svoboda square

Start with coffee once you are in Brno. They know how to prepare it. Every year, there is The Week of Coffee from 1st to 7th of October. At a café, they will always give you tips where to go in Brno. Now I will show you couple of my favorite places in the city.

 Silingr’s Square Špilberk

Stop on Zeleny Trh. Traders sell here fresh veggies and fruits every day. During grape harvest you can buy here perfect grapes. New wine is sold for couple of crowns only. There are many treasures in the surrounding streets starting with Old Town Hall. It was built in the 13th century. In the passageway, the famous dragon of Brno hangs from the ceiling. One small turret above the portal looks like it is about to fall. And it has looked like it for several hundred years. It seems like it is falling across quite Biskupsky Dvur. There is beautiful arcade and the scenic view of Petrov down to the Moravian Land Museum, Hus' theater and a Capuchin cloister.

Zelný trh

Petrov katedrála sv. Petra a Pavla

Continue to the monumental St Peter and Paul cathedral. Flagged streets around here can be easily compared to Hradcany, Prague. However, there are hardly any tourists. Therefore, you can much more enjoy the historical atmopshere. In case you are sick and tired of walking, then go up to a scenic gallery around both towers. You can see entire Brno and its landmarks from there. Also, you can see the famous Palava.

panorama

Upon a short break on grass terraces surrounding go through Havlova street back to historical district. Stop for something to eat. There are delicious meals at Café Morgal in the building of the Moravian Gallery. Another restaurant worth visiting is Jakoby on Jakubske square or La Bouchée on Udolni street. If you are a sushi fan, than go to Koishi – one of the best sushi restaurants in the Czech Republic.

There are many things you can do in Brno. Therefore, we are going to publish one more article next week.

Famous Versailles in France was example for many other residencies of nobility. The chateau in Jaromerice, dubbed Moravian Versailles, was, aparently, also built with French Versailles in mind. It is no false advertising to bring more tourists to this gem of the Baroque era. Jan Adam of Questenberk really wished to build his own Versailles in Jaromerice. This town was supposed to become cultural center in the region as well as home to culture and muses. Plans were grandiose yet lack of funding allowed only partial fulfilment of Jan Adam's dream. Even though, the chateau really became center of culture and it has remained venue of many important culture events ever since.
