France, Paris XVI – Montmartre: Place for Saints and Sins

Published: 10.9.2014
Today we return to Montmarte once more. We o to streets full of artists, souvenir vendors, and, of course cabarets for adults.

Last week we enjoyed internal and external beauty of Sacré-Cœur baislica, the second most visited sacral building next to Notre Dame cathedral. It is also a symbol of the then morally decaying Parisians who were depressed after Prussian defeat. Ater beautiful tour of this monumental building we moved on. Except typicalFrench coffee bars, bakeries, streets were lined with stalls with clothes and souvenirs. Many people and cars, many tourists. This all made unforgettable atmosphere of the place. All of a sudden we found ourselves on a small rectangular square Place du Tertre, with galleries on sides. The center were full of arts of all kinds. Despite the rainy weather, which are apparently the locals used to them there were countless. They met the painters, sculptors, carvers, but also sellers of excellent French wine. As we walked through the square, we realized that here found his artistic inspiration such artists as Pablo Picasso, Edgar Degas, Vincent van Gogh, Camille Pissarro, or Pierre-Auguste Renoir a mnoho dalších.

There are several museums on Montmartre. Worth mentioning is Espace Dalí devoted Salvadoru Dali. There is also a historic cemetery where they are buried prominent figures of French history and of course there is no theater. Montmartre is a kind of popular film set. I'm sure you know or have at least heard of films like Amélie Poulain Moulin Rouge or Paris, I Love You . If not, I will definitely recommend to watch it.

A church worth mentioning
Lets leave art to art and move to one of two important church. Church Saint-Jean de Montmartre we omitted for lack of time. But we visited the rest of former royal abbey and one of the oldest churches in Paris - Saint-Pierre de Montmartre church. Located just a short walk from the already mentioned "artistic" square. It is outwardly inconspicuous, but right after entering inside enchants simple monumentality and a few attractions. These include, for example, some columns from the ancient temple of the god Mars, an image that is attributed to the famous painter José de Ribera or Tomb of the French queen Adele Savoy . But we took the statue Parisian bishop St. Denise , which captured his alleged decapitation, which he holds in hands

After mundane stops we descended along beautiful stairs with modern “art” (graffiti) and then we moved under the hill. Places of sin, dance and unrestrained entertainment. Flooded with neon billboards we visited the most famous businesses. We walked around Le Chat noir, Lapin Agile or the most famous cabaret in the Moulin Rouge, or Red Mill.

Legendary Moulin Rouge
Moulin Rouge was founded already in 1889, and it hosted such personas as Édith Piaf, Frank Sinatra, Josephine Baker či Ella Fitzgerald. To most popular performances in local cabaret is a dance performance - cancan. Once served Moulin Rouge dance hall, operetta featured here and here for some time housed a cinema. From 1955 to the present are held so-called performances with dinner, but beware, tickets are also on booked a year in advance! It is interesting that we later learned was the company of the same name was also based in neighboring Vienna, and even five years earlier than in the Paris. Be that as it may, we have the "beauty" of these companies and cabarets enjoyed only from the outside.

Moulin Rouge
Montmartre is one of quarters full of contrasts. The lower parts lives sin, the upper part live in mundane purity. This gives this place its unique character worth visiting.
