SK: High Tatras – Ascend to Krivan

Published: 1.5.2014
Soon winter closure of Tatranian tourist trails (15th June 2014) weill end. Therefore, in advance we bring you an interesting alpine hike trip. Our goal today is the peak of the peaks, the symbol of Slovakia – majestic Krivan in the High Tatras.

Several tourist trails will lead your way up to Krivan . The most well-known go from Strbske Pleso and from Tri Studanky. We have chosen to start and end our day hikes at Tri Studantky (1140 m). It can be reached on foot, by bus or by car, following the Path of Freedom , which connects Strbske Pleso with the town of Podbanske. There is a small parking lot, paid, with lovely staff . We parked our car there right our arrival. After a necessary check of our tourist equipment we set off for an adventure.

Way to the Top

From the parking lot, our steps headed along gravel path of mild elevation until we reached a hut of the TANAP. Right on the slope by the hut there was a small wooden construction with benches and infoboards. Below was a beautiful wooden well. Icy spring was there. We had enough water and food so we did not stay long there and continued along damaged pathway. The pathway was marked by three tourist trails. The green headed to Krivan, the red labeled the Tatranian Highway, and the blue headed to Koprova Valleay.

We set off along the green tourist trail . A gravel road seamlessly changed to a forest path that after a while lead to serpentines. Relatively steep climbing proved our endurance. The first stop was a less visible peak of Grunik (1576 meters). There we experienced one of the first of amazing views over the Tatranian valley. And the ridges of the West Tatras . We moved on to the Krivansky Zleb (2120 meters) that is located next to the Prtiehyba ridge . We continued until we reached the aforementioned crossroads. There the road connects a tourist trail leading to Jamske Pleso, respectively from Strbske Pleso. On the crossroad that connect two different paths, only one trail goes from there and it goes up, to Krivan. Along massive granite rocks we climbed up to the national symbol of Slovakia. On the top of Krivan a double cross stands proudly. On it are several tables of various tourist organizations.

A view at 2494meter high peak is priceless. Freedom, beauty and carefreeness. Those were our feelings. The place we visited also the Sturovci visited. Thanks to them, Slovakians regard the place a national symbol. Near the cross there is a tourist box with a book and several memorial boards celebrating this place. This view is from the Low Tatras across Tatranian ridges to the peaks of the Fatras. Lakes surrounding this area add to the atmosphere. The closest is Zelene Pleso.

Krivan holds true to its reputation. We could see that the law is also known as one of the most popular highlights of Slovakia. At the time of our visit there were literally dozens of tourists of all ages. At the top we felt like one big family. Mutual interviews and assistance in descending were unprecedented. On the way back we speculate too much, and we chose the same route we used to got to the top. The entire hike took us almost 6 hours and I highly recommend it to pass all the tourists and mountain hikers.

Several interesting facts

Partizánsky bunker

Did you know that the there is also an asteroid named after Krivan? No? Neither did any of us :-) It happened in 1999, when it was discovered by Slovakian astronomer Peter Kusnirak . Krivan is a real symbol, for instance you can see it on the back side of Slovakian coins. Portrait Kriván was used many times in the past. For example, it is depicted in Slovakian state symbol and also in the state symbol of Czechoslovakia and even former Hungary. Every year, Kirvan is the meeting place of several hundred lovers of mountains and it will be no different this year! Therefore, if you have time and will, make sure you do not miss this event. It will start on August 16th 2014 . Krivan was once called “golden”. It was due to local gold mining. Even today it is possible to find remains of this unique mining history. Of course, we must not forget the guerrillas, who have fought for years there. To this day, there is a memorial of their fight - a guerrilla bunker where the fight of the guerilla the High Tatras with German fascists took place. We could continue on and on. No wonder they say that it is better to see once that hear for a hundred times.
