SK, Strba – Trip to Lakes of Love
Published: 10.4.2014
Today we go for a romantic walk to Strbske Pleso, a district of Strba town. It is a place that is popular among fishermen, however today it is a place where families with children go to, or where couples meet in the middle of Tatranian nature.
The place is Lakes of Love . They are located near a parking lot by Strbske Pleso. Less than 400 meters from there there is also Strbske Plse. The way to the lakes is very comfortable because the entrance is adjacent to the asphalt road. About two minutes of walk you will find yourself at the first lake. Here the forest pathway splits. To the right it goes across a wooden bridge to the second lake. To the left, the pathway flawlessly changes to a grassy pathway and continues along the lake. We choose the grassy one. And we did good! Several meters ahead we find an information board. We read something about the history of this place.
How it was created…
As we have learned, the lakes of love were ponds. They were called Strbske ponds. They were founded by Jan Jozef Szentiványi ,a farmer from Liptov. He established it at the end of the 19th century. He wanted to breed trouts that were than put to Strbske Pleso. In the past, there was even a small fishermen house on the shore of the lake. Perhaps you ask why these lakes are called the Lakes of Love. It is because the residents of High Tatras . They enjoyed this quiet place in the mid of Tatranian forests. And it was not only them! Even spa guests or couples in love went there. Another legend says, that the name is after the location because the lakes are located one next to another. Regardless what is true, this place is truly remarkable.
Symbol of love
Lakes of Love became sort of symbol of love, peace and relax. We also felt this way. At the inforboard we have learned that at the bottom of the larger of the lakes there should be a Slovakian double cross. It was put there in 1940. However, we have not noticed it even after several walks around the lake. Despite this, the pathways leading from the table took us to places where flowing water enhanced the feeling of connection of man and nature.
The lakes flows into the Mlynica River, that is so clear that you could even drink from it. By the shore there are wooden benches on which tourists discovering beauties of this place used. We stop there for a while to enjoy atmosphere of this unusual place on Earth. Ducks swim on a quiet water , flowers dangling in wind and sun rays shining through pines created experience we will remember for a long time. If you visit the Tatras, do not miss this short yet very interesting tourist stop.
