In narrow streets of historical center in Barcelona is really easy to get lost. However, you can be sure that you would always end up at some cathedral or, at least, small shrine. They are hard to see from distance, they just suddenly pop up in front of you. On the other hand, famous Sagrada Família is easy to see from distance.
One of the most humongous buildings is Gothical cathedral of the Holy Cross and St Eulalia referred to as Cathedral of Barcelona. There we can also find archbishop’s residence. In the crypt of St Eulalia, below the main altar, you can see detailed alabaster sarcophagus where remains of this sanct are supposed to lay.
The best example of Catalonian Gothics is considered Santa Maria del Mar church built in the 14th century. I can only confirm it. I had been thinking for a long time how medieval builders managed to build something like it with primitive technology they had.
Cathedrals are not the only medieval sights in the city. Hard to not notice is Gothic townhall Casa de la Ciutat or historical shipyard Les Drassanes which is to be found near the harbor. The shipyard was built in the 14th century the Naval Museum . Also the Pedralbes monastery is popular.
Sagrada Familia is the sight of same significance as Prague Castle or St Vitus cathedral is for Prague. At the end of the 19th and in the beginning of the 20th centuries, the main architect was Antoni Gaudí. He put incredible amount of creativity in it. Even though it is not finished, not even nearly, one can easily assume there is hardly any like it in the world.
The construction works started already in 1882. The works should finish in 2026 to celebrate 100th anniversary of architect’s death. Gaudí wanted his monumental building to create an incentive to return to Roman Catholic church teachings, therefore he wanted to build “the last large shrine of Christianity”. Therefore, the cathedral has lots of Christian symbols. Perhaps the most interesting one is 18 towers which represent 12 apostles, 4 evangelists, Virgin Mary, and Jesus Christ.
I also recommend you to visit the Museum of Catalonia above Placa Espanaya. The museum has an interesting exhibition and offers a beautiful vista from its roof terrace. You can buy a special ticket to there and it is much cheaper than an entrance to the exhibition itself. Then go up around the Joan Miró Museum to Barcelona Castle. You can either go on foot, or take a bus that would take you to the top, or use a cable way to overcome a part of the route.
You need couple of days to visit at least the most popular sights. You will not get bored.
