Bolivia – the beautiful city of Sucre

Published: 1.9.2023
Sucre is the most beautiful city in Bolivia with the best well-preserved colonial architecture we have seen so far. It is also the cleanest and most well-maintained city in the country. Somehow you can feel the order and will of the people to keep the city nice. I tis elegant, simple by colors, and locals are proud to walk around it. It is more or less of the size of Potosi. Around quarter million people live there. Sucre was added to UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 1991.

Sucre is sitauted at 2790 meters. It is lcoated in central south Bolivia. The city was founded by Pedro de Anzurez in the mid-16th century. Now it is Bolivian capital and also the capital of Chuquisaca departament. It is also home to the Supreme Court, Counel of Judges but the president and the government are in situated in La Paz. Majority of buildings in the historical center are white. Therefore, many call Sucre "the White City". Parque Cretácico (the Chalk Park) is situated nearby. There are life-sized models of dinosaurs. Not randomly thouh –several petrified traces of these creatures.

court palace

We designated two days to spend in Sucre. On the first day, we went to the historical center and beautiful streets. Plaza 25 de Mayo is the main square of the city. The cathedral belfry rises in the edge of the square. There are statues and it has a red roof. Next to the cathedral, there is an impressive building of the state police (Prefectura de Chuquisaca).

Plaza 25 de Mayo (main square)

Casa de la Libertad is another interesting place. In 1825, the independence of Bolivia was signed there. Today, when we are there, about 200 people gather with signs. We have been in Bolivia mere two weeks and this is the third strike we have seen. It seems as it was some sort of national sport of sorts.

a strike on the square

They walk around the square while shooting with a pistol. They stop and chant for a while. An hour later, everything is over. Not even the guards in front of the building take the protest seriously. They smile, play with their phones and talk. Then the crowd disperses. They go to sit down with an ice cream or jell-o somewhere on the square. Some take pictures in front of lion statues situated in the center of the square. It rather seems that the strikers made a beautiful day off.

city cathedral and the police building

We walk down Arenales street around the churches of Santa Monica and Santa Barbara. We reach Simon Bolivar park. This park stretches from the building of the court and goes north. There is a fountain on its edge. Twice a day, water sprinkles with music in the background. This happens before the noon and then in the evening with a light show. A miniature of the Eiffel Tower is set in the center of the park. You can take a ride there and then take a look around. A dinosaur-themed children playground is adjacent to the park. There are concrete casts of dinosaur prints. There are several swings with motives of the extinct animals. Also there are high Apatosaur-themed slides. Even we tried them out.

Santa Barbara church

On the following day we walked the area above the city. There is beautiful Plaza Pedro de Anzures square. On the square, there is Recoleta church in white color. An arcad is situated opposite the church. When at the arcade you can see the lower part of historical center of the city. Not many tourists go there. One can therefore enjoy peace in the morning, get warmer under the sun. Chidlren waiting for the school to begin play with ball. There is the Museum de la Recoleta just around the corner.

On the way down from the Recola scenic spot, we roam on well maintained streets until we end up at San Roque church on PLaza Beni (southwest from downtown). It doesn't look anything special but it is nice and it is peace there from it is aside from the busy center. We return to the center. While on our way we visit Templo de la Merced. It has beautiful itnerior. The busiest area in normally tranquil city is San Alberto street. There are many shops, restaurants, and it is very busy all day long there.

Templo de San Roque

You could walk around Sucre in any direction and on every street and you would still find something new, interesting and impresssive. At the first glance, it is apparent the city is kept in top shape. Even family houses add to city's luxurious look, well only if we cound the center. Of course, once you stray away from downtown you see more and more buildings in worse shape. However, the locals are proud of their city everyhwere.

Copacabana is usually the first city in Bolivia a traveller visits when travelling by land from Peru. If not, he should certainly consider the visit. Shall we excuse the city for the mandatory and quite unnecessary fee, Copacabana is a nice and quite place to rest. The vista over Lake Titicaca makes it even better and adds to the atmosphere. The city is small making this resort on the lake a picturesque and magical place. You can easily walk here for how long you want and still enjoy it.

Before we get to Asuncion we need to ride through Gran Chaco which spans across Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay. It covers most part of Paraguayan north where most of the war with Bolivia took place in the 1930s. Paraguay won it. The reason for the wall was that both parties mistakenly believed to hold oil resources. Today it is just empy wasteland covered of grass and trees.

Santa Cruz de la Sierra is the largest city in Bolivia. It is situated in the central-eastern part of the country far from the Ands. It stretches on flat land. It is remarkable to view the city from bird’s eye perspective. It is of eliptical shape consisting of three bypass circuits (anillos). These are interconnected by radiales – main roads to which are given numbers clockwise. There are 27 of them.

The road from Uyuni to Potosí takes mere three hours. It would be nothing less but a sin not looking from the window. The road goes up hill when leaving flat desert region. It crosses low yet beautiful Rainbow Mountains. The land has still features of desert. It is quite dry and without large vegetation Lamas and nandas could be spotted along the road.

Our plans receive significant blow once we found out at the terminus in Cochabamba that bus driving companies are on strike. This is nothing unusual in Bolivia. We spending there our second week and we happen to see second one. However, inhabitants and employees have good attitude towards it and they are hardly annoyed. We have ben told several times that such a strike lasts about three days at least.

Bolívia – metropolis La Paz

La Paz interested me the most of all places in Bolivia. I have always considered its unusual altitude interesting. I have always thought about how people live at 3600 meters of altitude. After I have spent some time at these altitudes in Ecuador or Peru, I have found out it is not hard at all. One gets simply used to it. Still, La Paz is quite a phenomena among large world cities for how high it is located.

Bolivia – Coroico Village

We leave sunny Copacabana and travel through La Paz to Coroico, a small village we deliberately chose to spend several days in nature. There goes direct line of public transportation (collective) from La Paz. It takes about three hours. We need to go from the altitude of 3600 meters (La Paz) even one kilometer higher. Then we would go donw serpentines to Yungas region (a region between the Andes and lowland forests). In this region there is the “death road”, a Bolivian attraction. Since 2006, there has been opened an asphalt road. Therefore the muddy road which used to be “world’s most dangerous road”. Every year allegedly 300 people died there. Today, only bikers use it.
