China, Studies: Beijing – The Red-Hot Wall

Published: 2.1.2016
We managed climbing up the hill very well. We walked through a small village. Some watched us, some obviously had met tourists efore and waved at us. Once we reached a crossroad we suddenly saw its contours. And we also recognized contours of a small shop at the crossroads. It wasn’t overpriced. Surprisingly. We refilled our water and sugar supplies (popsicles). If there exists something like an addiction on popsicles, I was an addict in China.

Huanghuacheng 黄花城 (the Wall of Yellow Flowers) was not covered in golden flower leaves any more but it still stood on the hill. When we reached it we considered another dilemma for the wall was crossed by a road at one point. We had to choose what side we want. It wasn’t that hard to make a choice eventually. The wall was half a ruin to the left. We wouldn’t be even able to climb it let alone go along it. Therefore we crossed Jintang dam 金汤. Because the water was really polluted the view was far from wonderful. Huge dead fish floated on the surface. Nevertheless, we attempted to remember the legend tied to the lake’s name. Two symbols are carved to the wall - the jintang or “a unconquerable fortress”. One honest general took a good care of its construction which prolonged the buiidng process. The emperor, however, believed general’s enemies that he just put all the money into his pocket and issued an order of execution. Only later he realized how strong and perfect the wall in this section is and also realized his unfairness to the general. Therefore, he carved the two symbols onto the wall.

Jintang dam Great Wall of China

A Chinese guy put an end to our thought because he asked money for an entrance onto the wall. We were about to refuse him but he explained that the garden everyone who crosses the wall to is his. He wanted just two yuans from everybody (about 6 CZK). We paid him and continued on. The area was empty. Suddenly we saw a steep ladder secured on the top. We used it to climb on the wall. The heat was unbearable and we were roasting under the sun.

 Great Wall of China

The view was far more interesting. There was just the wall and hills covered by woods, no people around. Walking on red-hot stones we reached one of the watchtowers which line the wall. In the shade of the tower we unpacked our snacks.

 Great Wall of China

Wind stroke our faces. Noise coming from cars was too far away. We ate some of the great food we had brought with. At this moment I realized how much I would miss our travels and more so, how much I would miss China.

We survived the trip on the Great Wall of China. We liked it but ahead would be waiting pre-departure preparations. We were busy packing, me and B. As it turned out, packing one year worth of life in China to one coffer is far from easy and takes much more than just one afternoon. Therefore, I took T and P to their guest house and left them to take care of themselves.

To conclude the great journey we did with T and P we intended to see two place. We had seen those with B already yet they were still interesting enough for us to see them again. First, it was the Summer Palace (Yiheyuan颐和园), a romantic place we idyllically remembered for its winter atmosphere. In summer, however, the atmosphere was much worse. The second place in our trip would be the Forbidden City, Gugong in Chinese. It means “the Old Palace”.
