France, French Riviera II: Nice – Vibrant Center – VIDEO

Published: 29.9.2021
France’s second most visited city is situated in country’s south, in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, near the Italian border. Millions of tourists travel here to see the famous Côte d'Azur, enjoy beautiful weather, and great French wine. The place gained fame in the 18th century. Rich English families took shelter here from winter at home. The whole town has fantastic atmosphere. Join us in for a tour!

Local Terra Amata archeological site unveiled the oldest evidence of human utilization of fire and foundations of a house estimated to be around 230 thousand years old. The city was founded by the Romans in the 3rd century B.C. Soon, it became an important port and a trade route ran through there. Since the 15th century, it was one of the most important ports and fortresses on the Mediterranean Sea. Until the present, you can find remains of massive fortification that sheltered the city.

Nice

Today, Nice is a major tourist destination. It is only behind Paris in popularity in France. Also, Nice focuses on education and research. You can find the large Sophia Antipolis science park near the city.

Adjacent to the city is Nice Côte d'Azur Airport. Every year 10 million passengers travel through there, again behind Paris the highest number in all France. Also, seasonal flights are directed here from Prague. High-speed TGV railroad connects Nice with Paris. However, to get to Marseille I have to travel by traditional trail. The whole route takes less than 6 hours. Also, trains depart form here to Milano. An express train also departs from here to Moscow while making a stop in the Czech Republic.

Nice

People travel to Nice to enjoy life mostly. You can find, therefore, a restaurant, café, or bar in every historic structure in downtown. The city has also vibrant culture – such as classical music, or modern art exhibitions. It makes use of famous European artists enchantet by Cote d’Azur. For instance, famous French painter Henri Matisse lived and painted for some time in Nice.

One of the finest galleries is the Musée d'Art Moderne et d'Art Contemporain (the Modern Art Museum). It holds a permanent exhibition from artists who painted in Nice. Also, there are vast collections of pop-art, and neorealism. Jean Renoir gallery is also worth a try. Admission is free..

Should you travel to Nice, visit local harbor and around. Today, there are usually only private yachts and small fishing boats. However, if you are lucky, you can see magnificent sailboat which sails the Mediterranean water. Also, a climb up to Cimiez above the port is worth the effort. Once there was a fortress. From there, you get beautiful vista of the city and the coastline. Good visibility opens a view of the Alps. Also, you can find there remains of original Roman fortification, a Franciscan cloister, and Italian gardens.

Nice offers also beautiful promenades, squares, spas, parks, endless shopping spree, and also a long pebble beach and clear blue water. I don’t think the city is the right place hwere to spend your summer vacation (high prices also play a role). However, I recommend you to visit it for couple of days at least.

„When they want to get rid of them, rich Parisians send their children here to study at the university. So, it is expensive here but the life is vibrant,“ says Louis about his home-town, a guy I met during my stay there. Indeed, for a long time I haven’t been to a place that would have so much of student atmosphere yet it wasn’t flooded with “poor” hipster cafes. Add more than two thousand years of history, narrow streets with old houses made of sandstone and friendly inhabitants of Provence. This makes almost perfect image of one of the most famous towns in the south of France.
