Nelson town is one of the oldest in New Zealand. It was the very first town on New Zealand's southern island. Sights, however, are not what is interesting the most about this town. It is the place with most sunny days on the Southern Island. Moreover, it is surrounded by amazing nature. Among the most popular activities are trips to the Abel Tasman national park.
Located in the Tasman bay on the north of New Zealand's southern island, the town is surrounded by mountains from all sides. Mount Richmond park is situated in the southwest. In the east, there is the aforementioned Abel Tasman park and Kahurangi park. In the south stretches the Nelson Lakes National Park. People who lova nature will love it here. Nelson is a great place to begin your trips at.
Nelson also has some things to offer to tourists. By the way, there is the geographic center of New Zealand. To reach this point of interest, you can make a nice afternoon walk. From there you may enjoy a beautiful vista over the entire town. On your way, make a stop at a Japanese garden and The Founders Heritage Park museum featuring historic structure and a historic railway.
Also, visit Jesus Christ Cathedral, an interesting structure in the city center. Walk through local side alleys of easy-going atmosphere. Stop by Jens Hansen goldsmith shop. There the one ring for the Lord of the Rings trilogy was created. Were you interested in local crafs and art, don't forget about Saturday market. Local artists and crafsmen display their works there. Almost on any day, you may enjoy here live music. Local art scene is very active.
I recommend you to visit Nelson for one day at least. It is a place of great, easy-going atmosphere on the southern island of New Zealand.
