SK, Bratislava: Modern City with Historical Downtown -VIDEO

Published: 6.1.2015
Bratislava is the capital and the largest city in Slovakia. The Danube flows through this city. Five bridgest (well, technically four today as the Stary Bridge is being disassembled only to be replaced with a new one). The most interesting si the SNP bridge built in the 20th century. There are couple of distributaries going to nowhere yet surrounded with riparian forests. Bratislava borders two countries – Hungary and Austria.

Most of the landmarks are in the downtown. There are many Baroque-style palaces. Slovak government resides in the former archbishop’s palace. Slovakian president has his residence in Grasalkovic’s palace. The mayor is in Primacialny palace. Among the well known buildings are the cathedral of St Martin, which was a coronation church for Hungarian kings since from the 16th to the 19th century. Then there is the 13th-century Franciscan church, the oldest church in Bratislava. Knight ceremonies took place there. The church of St Elizabeth referred to as the „Modry Church“ is an Art-Noveau construction built in the years 1909 – 1913. It has one navy and a tower on the side. The tower has a helmet-shaped roof. The mosaic depicting St Elizabeth holding a rose decorates the main altar.

One of Bratislava’s symbols lures above the city - Bratislavský hrad. The castle is a complex of buildings on the historical compound located on a hill on the Danube’s left bank. The compound’s main sight is the former royal palace which makes classic panorama of Bratislava. In the palace, exhibitions by the Department of History to Slovak National Museum. Part of the building is used for representative purposes. The castle was declared a national landmark in 1961.

Another important sight in the city, and the most important cultural institution, is the Slovak National Theatre in Hviezdoslav’s Square. The theater is a repertoar theater consisting of opera, ballet, and drama. In the second half of the 18th century, a former city theater used to stand there. In the theater, mostly Hungarian a German theatre companies performed.

Bratislava is the richest city in Slovakia. Many travel there to find work. New skyscrapers are constantly being built. It is also the most important traffic route. The international airport of M. R. Stefanik sees planes landing from all around the world. The river of Danube sees personal boats as well as freighters. The downtown is crisscrossed with tram lines and bus lines. Trains make also important share in the public transportation.

BratislavaBratislava, stará tržnica

I visited Bratislava in the time before Christmas. I could enjoy the atmosphere on beautiful square where Christmas markets took place. I saw glowing Christmas tree, and enjoyed overall peace. I stopped at Bratislava Restaurant at SNP square. The restaurant has great style. Inside there is even Golden Street of Bratislava . There you would see original facades that do not exist today, unfortunately. Well, except one. It is a corner house on Zidovska Street. This house is the only one that remained the same until the present. It is being referred to as U Dobreho Pastyre . Today, a clockwork museum is located there. The scale model of this house in Bratislavska Restaurace is a shop of bio products, various forms of sheep cheese, and freshly baked bread. Moreover, you can find here a partly-made town-hall of Zuckermandel , a house by the architect MX Messerschmidt, and an old bakery equipped with genuine oven making delicious Bratislava bread buns. The interior is made of natural materials. The second floor will dazzle you for its stained glass made by using original method of filling lead forms with colored glass. And you can buy a souvenir in one of local souvenir shops.
