SK, Liptov: The Town of Ziar and A Hike into the Surroundings

This time we visit West Tatra Mounains, 10 kilometers northeast of Liptovsky Mikulas. There we visit the quiant town of Ziar.
This quite a long village in the foothils of the West Tatra Mountains is a popular tourist destination because it is the gateway to Ziar valley. Before we invite you for a walk, let's tell you something about the village itself.
Ziar town is situated in the middle of Liptov basin. Its closest neighbor is Smrecany town, both towns are connected due to dense housing development. There is only one cultural sight – the Heroes of SNP memorial. Moreover, there are several recreational resorts, a little ski resort, evangelical belfry, and even a chalet. Fields when once cabbage was grown surround the town. Today, there is a blueberry plantation. In addition to that there are two mineral springs, rare flora and fauna.
The history of the town began in the year 1349. The name refers to blinding fires set in the area of the town in the past. Locals used to breed sheep, be employed in agriculture, and burned charcoal, mined gold and silver. Some even had catching wolves for their job, for wolves used to be present there in large numbers so the locals had to catch them into special nets.
Let's us leave history be. Now we set out to Ziarska valley. There are cabins, chalet, and a car park at the village's end. From here on, tourists may join the blue trail running to Ziarska cabin and to one of Tatra's saddles. Tourists who would prefer an easier hike may visit the Medvedi drift.
It is the only old mine on Liptov open to the public. With a headlamp in special clothes you will walk through the mine and see mining history from upclose. The atmosphere is great and you will long remember it. Before entering, read infromation boards about Krivan mines thoroughly. They also refer to Liptov's legendary underground realm.
Ziar town is just the place great for a trip. You may enjoy nature here all year round and see some unusual places. Taste great local food, and breath fresh air on your hike.
