South Africa: Other Places to Visit

Published: 29.3.2019
Drakensberg which translates as the Dragon Mountains span on the border with Lesoth, are one of the most popular places for holiday in South Africa and also some of the country's highest mountains. The highest local peak is Mafadi (3,450 m). The Drakensberg National Park is part of the National Park uKhahlamba-Drakensberg. The many hiking trails through which the mountains are interwoven make them a paradise for hiking.

You can also take a trip to the mountains on horseback, mountain bikes or quads. However, marches are the best way to enjoy local scenery, such as Giant’s Castle. On the hiking trails you can either walk alone or with a guide who will tell you many attractions along the way.

If you are already in the Dragon Mountains, we have to recommend one more specific trip, in the southern region of the mountain range where the Sani Pass is located. This 9 km mountain pass will take you to the highest point in Africa, accessible by car. We recommend getting a travel ticket that will take you there in a 4 × 4 car with some experienced guide.

So you get over 1300 meters of elevation and the guide will make your trip even more interesting. At the top of the pass at 2,876 meters you will cross the border with the Kingdom of Lesotho. Be ready for passport control here. You will then arrive at Sani Mountain Lodge, the lodge that claims to be the highest-situated pub in Africa.

Blyde River Canyon

We will leave the Dragon Mountains in the south and head for the northeast corner of South Africa to the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve. Tourists usually stop on the road from Johannesburg to Kruger National Park. And it's a place you shouldn't miss, as Blyde River Canyon is the second largest canyon in the continent. This subtropical area boasts diverse flora and fauna. You will enjoy beautiful waterfalls, views of interesting rock formations, South African primates, hippos and crocodiles.

Diving With White Sharks

Get into a massive metal cage and immerse yourself in the ocean where you meet big white sharks face to face. This activity has become very popular in recent years. The best time for diving is April to October, but sharks are found throughout the year due to the large amount of fish and seals in local waters.
