Some 30 minutes from Bratislava on the Austrian bank of the Morava River is the town of Marchegg with a population of almost 3,000. In addition to the baroque castle, which was built by the Czech king Přemysl Otakar II., you can see the breathtaking medieval walls with the well-preserved Vienna Gate (Wiener Tor), the Marchauen nature reserve (Naturreservat Marchauen), where conservationists are trying to preserve the original wetlands and meadows or the relatively new attraction in the form of the Vysomarch cycle bridge.

While in the past there were up to 12 towns (bridges and fords) on the Austrian-Slovak border, where it was possible to cross the Morava River, during the period of the so-called not a single road bridge survived the Iron Curtain. The only exception was the railway bridge between Devínská Nová Ves and the town of Marchegg, but it also operated only in a limited mode.
