Canaria Islands, Tenerife – Puerto de la Cruz

Unlike the dry and warm south, the north is more windy and the weather is damper. This creates ideal conditions for strolling through the charming city center, sitting in the front gardens of the restaurants or watching the untamed waves of the ocean. The weather is pleasant even in the winter, so Puerto is frequently visited during Christmas and New Year's Eve celebrations.

The biggest tourist attractions include an 18th century botanical garden, banana plantations, Lago Martianez - a complex of fresh sea water pools and a zoo called Loro Park. The biggest attraction, however, is the almost black coast, which is made of lava stones. Because of the more rugged beaches, it pays to have water shoes with you. The water in the ocean may be somewhat colder for some, and windy weather sometimes causes quite strong waves. However, at least for refreshment, the water temperature is sufficient.

While walking through the city center, you can see typical colonial architecture and historic houses with wooden balconies. I recommend going to the magnificent Plaza del Charco, an oasis in the middle of the city. Perhaps this is because palm trees and laurels imported in Cuba in the 19th century create a pleasant shade. Another point of interest is just about the street next to the old fishing port, where the small Playa del Muelle beach is now located. You can also see the 17th-century Castillo San Felipe Fortress to protect the island from pirates, Englishmen and Frenchmen.

We can also use the city as a starting point for interesting trips in the area. Thanks to quality trips, we can make a day trip by bus or rented car to La Laguna or under the Pico del Teide volcano.
