Spain, Murcia – Salty Lagoon, Flamingos, and A Green Mountain Range

Published: 19.12.2023
Almost everyone knows the Dead Sea in Israel, but have you ever heard of the European one? This seawater lagoon is located in the Spanish region of Murica and is called the Mar Menor.

If you've been to Israel, you'll probably be a little surprised. Blue blue water and waves are not waiting for you, but it is still an experience, with healing effects. In this "lake", the water is up to 5 ° C higher than the secondary sea, it rains here only a few days a year, so tourists come here to swim from May to November. In other months, the area is quiet and ideal for exploring local sights.

The capital of the Murcia region is the town of the same name. It is not as well known as other Spanish cities, but we call it "Advanced Spain". So if you have traveled through Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Granada and similar cities, this is an ideal choice.

Murcia looks like it is blinded by various villages and in its historic center you will find various Baroque, Gothic and Renaissance monuments. Pay particular attention to the Cathedral of Santa María, which has stood here since 1385 and is the center of local worship. You can even find a museum in Santa Clara Monastery.

But if Murcia is popular for something, it's for its rich gastronomy. So don't forget to try the local specialties - Mediterranean risotto in several ways, fried lemon leaves in batter, zarangollu, fish, cheese and great wines.

Where To For A Trip?

Not far from Murcia is the Salinas de San Pedro del Pinatar Natural Park, where flamingos roam the wild. But that is not the only interest. You can refresh yourself here in rose water.

However, the biggest attraction remains the Sierra Espuña. The terrain is not very demanding and you will have wonderful views of the surroundings. The whole mountain range is beautifully green, but it was not always so. It was looted by coal and mineral mining, the trees were cut down by one hundred and six. In the 19th century, however, the Spaniards decided to plant bare hills. Since 1992, the place has been declared a national park, of which everyone is rightly proud.

The La Unión mining area is definitely not an interesting trip just for men. This is a protected area where you can walk around the historic mines. You will learn many interesting things about the mining industry and the processing of mineral materials (minerals, lead, silver, iron).

Doesn't all this sound absolutely amazing?
