USA, Colorado: Durango – Train Ride Across Canyon

Published: 29.11.2022
In today's article on the United States of America, we visit Colorado, the 16,000-city city of Durango, which is the most populous city of La Plata. Established in 1880, Durango is now mainly the starting point for excursions in the area, such as the adventurous Narrow Gauge Narrow Gauge Railroad to Silverton.

It is quite possible that this train ride will exceed your expectations. Look forward to renovated historic wagons, which of course pulls a historic steam locomotive. You will feel like the heroes of a western or a Wild West book. The train is open all year round, but unfortunately in winter you cannot count on getting to Silverton itself. If this is not possible, the train will stop just outside the area where there is a high risk of avalanches. Count on the fact that winter short trips take a pleasant five hours. The train also stops in Cascade Canyon, where you can get off and walk around. On the other hand, a ride to Silverton and back in the summer will take about nine hours.

Looking at some historic buildings in the city center, it is clear that Durango was a relatively important place in the past. One of the most impressive buildings is the Strater Hotel. At this hotel, the well-known American writer Louis L'Amour wrote some of his books, and also US Presidents John F. Kennedy and Gerald Ford stayed here for some time. The hotel also boasts beautiful woodcuts from the late 19th century.

We will continue with the Railway Museum. You will find here the first one about steam locomotives, but you will also see a mix of everything. From perfectly refurbished vintage cars to a solar car to old farm tools, stagecoaches, etc. The entrance to the museum is free and you will learn a lot, so do not hesitate.

Durango

We will also take a walk along the Animas River, which is 10 kilometers long and follows a paved path that is lined with various information boards, works of art and places where you can just sit and enjoy the view of the river. The trail is also suitable for cycling or running. Depending on the time of year you will see fishermen, kayakers or rafting trips. A generally good mood may also entice you to some water adventure.

Durango

Not far from the city is the northern San Juan National Forest, along the Animas River. If you like camping, skiing or snowmobiling, then you have found the right place.
