USA, Iowa – Cedar Rapids
The National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library is located here, where local permanent and temporary exhibitions present Czech and Slovak culture to Americans. In addition, various events such as workshops, concerts or film screenings take place here every week.
Another destination for our trip is the Museum of Art, located in the city center next to the Cedar Rapids Public Library. In addition to the permanent exhibitions, the museum always has many temporary exhibitions. One of the main attractions, however, is the work of Grant Wood, a native of Iowa. In addition, you can also look forward to, for example, the art of ancient Rome, which will give you an insight into its daily life.
An important historical site is the Paramount Theater, which hosts first-class artistic performances. It was originally built in the 1920s as a cinema and space for vaudeville performances. Due to the floods in 2008, the entire theater was renovated. Today, you can go here, for example, for Broadway performances or musical performances by local bands. The Paramount Theater is also the home stage of the Iowa Orchestra.
Our next steps will be directed to the Museum of African American History, which is open all days except Sunday. The goal is to present the history of African American culture in the United States and abroad. The exhibits show the genesis of this culture in West Africa and continue to the present day. We recommend trying a guided tour, there are also various discussions.
If you want to take a break from the city, then about twenty kilometers from the city begins the Palisades-Kepler State Park, where you can enjoy hiking, canoeing, fishing or rock climbing, surrounded by beautiful nature. Of course, there is no problem sleeping in cottages or in a campsite.
At the Indian Creek Nature Center, you'll learn more about ecosystems and even explore them. The activities of the local center are focused on environmental education, so you will learn a lot about forests, peat bogs, prairies or wildlife..
