Vietnam, Arund Hue – A Trip to the Bach Ma National Park

Published: 19.1.2019
One day trip to the Bach Ma National Park, approximately 40 kilometers from Hue, was one of our best days in Vietnam. The park was founded in 1991 and its name means a white horse. It covers an area of 220 square kilometers.

Many plant species grow here and live a lot of animals. Among the most interesting are the rare antelope saola or langur, leopard and black bear. However, it is necessary to prepare them primarily for meeting spiders, snakes and 100% leeches and unpleasant wasps. After these discoveries, we had at least the final fortune when we saw the jungle (primate species) in tree crowns. For a trip to the park it is necessary to take closed shoes. Directions are more like the simpler ferrats, so do not put them in your flip-flops. In the jungle the weather changes for just a few minutes, so it is good to pack a raincoat or a weaker jacket - on the abundantly visited peak Bach Ma is much cooler.

Early in the morning we leave Hue directly to the park. We still stop at the tourist center to use normal toilets, but here is the first unpleasant surprise in the form of a huge spider. We are heading to the forest and not to the center of the metropolis.

At first, an hour-long drive takes us through the steep slope to the highest peak of the Bach Ma National Park - White Horse Mountain. On the way, we offer amazing views across the forest and surrounding peaks, the weather is constantly changing, so the landscape is quite different. The White Horse Mountain peak reaches a height of 1450 meters, and there is a sculpture of two white-eyed sculptures and a park named after it. At the same time, every tourist can ring a huge bell. On the way to the summit we are passing the entrance to one of the tunnels that was built during the war against the Americans and measures about 140 m. However, it is not recommended to enter the tunnel, during the rains can be flooded, and snakes and spiders make their nests here.

After visiting the summit, we are walking down the same road a few miles downhill and the main trip of the day - the Five Lakes Trail - is waiting for us. At the beginning of the trail we are equipped with a harness with a cable, a carbine and a helmet, because along the lakes sometimes climbs more dangerous places. You can also choose the so-called chicken way, which should be much easier. Occasionally, annoying wasps appear, so it is advisable not to laugh and to do nothing because it is just attracting them. However, the trail itself is absolutely amazing. In the meantime, we get to the first waterfalls and the lake, and all this natural scenery is simply unprepared, absolutely beautiful. In the last lake there is also a possibility of swimming, the water is clean, but only around 14 ° C. Here we take a lunch break and we remove the first leech, unfortunately.

Then we continue along the water to the beginning of the largest waterfall that falls from a steep rock. When it is clear, there must be a wonderful view, but our fog also has its own atmosphere. Here also ends the main part of the trail, and we are no longer waiting for climbing the rocks or wading through the water, but only a pleasant jungle walk back. On the way to the clearing, we pass through the large statue of the Buddha, and a bit further ends our today's beautiful trip.

Da Nang (a city almost in the geographic center of Vietnam) is largely unknown. Which is unfortunate. An average tourist usually passes by there in a taxi on his way from the airport to his favorite Hoi An hotel…. I spent three weeks in Da Nang. And the city got on the list of my favorite places in Southeast Asia (right next to Chiang Mai). In Top Gear, Jeremy Clarkson called the old road to Hue as the “abandoned fragment of perfection.” I absolutely agree.

Upon an hour of waiting for a visa I was free to explore the capital of the country I really looked forward to exploring. First of all, I somehow let a cab driver to make a 300 crown rip off. Sometimes things like this happen. But honestly – this happens in Prague as well. Aboard the airplane I could see streets where millions of bikes stream in all directions. And “down” here the traffic is even more crazy. If I compare Ho Chi Minh city to Bangkok, a city of comparable size, in the former there are much less traffic jams. One must add that there is no subway, or rail that would go above the ground. It seems that high taxes on car is working.

We imagined the visit to the lake as relaxing time after quite a busy day. The reality was seriously different from our expectations. I have remembered the first impression until today. With my daughter and son, we dodged through the local traffic and it was not really easy. The flood of motorcycles was not to stop. We naively thought that someone might slow down or even stop. Don't expect that. Just walk to the other end of the road. And be brave.
