Costa Rica – Puerto Jiménez and Matapalo

Published: 17.7.2021
Approximately thirty minutes of drive from the town of Golfito to the small port of Puerto Jiménez, a small town in the province of Puntaneras on the Osa Peninsula. It is probably the cheapest and fastest way (about half to three quarters of an hour) to get to this southern tip of Costa Rica. There is also a regular flight here because there is a small airport in Puerto Jiménez. However, it only holds about 4 passengers, and the flight price is countless higher than for cruises. At the same time, if you are lucky, dolphins will join you on a short journey.

Immediately after leaving the port, we are welcomed by a loud roar of red aracanga red parrots. Dirt roads continue along the often dilapidated houses, where there are plenty of cafes and restaurants. A little further away we pass a football field, behind which is a botanical garden. Puerto Jiménez is lined with beautiful beaches full of hermit crabs and crabs. Sea water has a pleasant temperature to relax and again there is a very noticeable difference between high tide and low tide. However, the city itself has a different role than purely holiday. It is a transfer point for travelers and tourists to the famous Parque National Corcovado National Park, where up to several days of expeditions are organized from Puerto Jiménez. These can begin here at the southern tip of the peninsula and end up in the northern bay, where whales can be observed at some time of year. There are many interesting animals in the park, such as cougars, tapirs, ocelots, crocodiles and much more. Night can be spent in the ranch station right in the park. The downside is that trips are relatively expensive and time consuming.

As a simpler option, a trip to Matapalo is offered. Directly from Puerto Jiménez every morning a collective taxi goes for a few dollars to the national park, but it also stops in Matapal. The evening returns to the same path. Be sure to confirm your departure times at the accommodation and then in the taxi, because it would be very difficult to get back on your own. The stony, unprepared road from Puerto Jiménez to Matapala takes about an hour, even if it is only about 17 kilometers away. Although comfort cannot be said, the journey with Costa Rica is very cheerful and leads through a beautiful landscape, where plains and jungles alternate.

The exit stop in Matapal itself is also located in the middle of the jungle, where, apart from the road, there is only one road towards the coast and then along it, so we set out on it. We observe huge butterflies, many lizards and sometimes agouti or big blue-red crabs. Among the vast trees are also dwellings, hotels and apartments. There is only one possibility of refreshment in Matapal if you are not staying here, but it is a very beautiful place with swimming pool and very helpful staff - Encanta la Vida. Right on the access road, a few meters above our heads, monkeys welcome us.

Mostly surfers come to Matapala because they have ideal conditions here and the beautiful beaches here are almost empty. But there is a great opportunity to relax without a surfboard, as the beaches of paradise are waiting for everyone. Practically your only, but very numerous, companions will be hermit crabs, sometimes iguanas will peek out from behind the tree, from the morning and in the evening there will be a frightening scream of shrieks from the jungle and a lot of pelicans and herons fishing at sea. Whom the beach would get tired of, can go to the nearby waterfalls - the locals like to advise the way, but beware of the dry season. On certain days, the sea turtles are also released at the station, but ask in advance, for example, in Encanta la Vida, before you plan a trip to miss this attraction.

Panama is a relatively bland country that lies in the shadow of Costa Rica's increasingly touristy tourist destination, with the infamous Colombia on its other side. Nevertheless, a large number of flights to Central America are conducted through Tocumen International Airport, which is located 24 kilometers from the capital city of Panama. And because there are good land and air links between Central American states, there are more to visit in one trip. They accept classic US dollars everywhere (although with a worse exchange rate), so there is no need to exchange money and the Panamanian Balboa has the same exchange rate.

We reach the volcano by bus, which stops in front of the National Theater in San José and goes directly to the crater parking lot. The road is quite tiring and slow, a short distance from the top will be delayed by a column of cars in front of the ticket offices (like every national park, this one is also charged).

We move from the wild Tortuguera to the central part of Costa Rica, where we plan to spend the last few days of our trip. The destination is the capital of San José, where we also want to make several trips to the surroundings. We stay in the great Costa Rica Backpackers, a hostel with amazing facilities including a swimming pool, bar, kitchenette or restaurant. They also offer an exchange of money for a very pleasant course and many optional trips.

Today a great journey is upon us for we leave Liberia and head to the east coast of Costa Rica, which is washed by the Caribbean Sea. We go to Tortuguero National Park (Parque nacional Tortuguero), located in the province of Limón. The name Tortuguero comes from the Spanish word tortuga - tortoise. The park covers an area of 312 km² and also has a small village. You can only get here by boat or plane.

After visiting the picturesque Montezuma, we move to the north for the last time. The destination is the city of Liberia, but it will only be our starting point for the next two trips. The first is a visit to Costa Rica's northern neighbor, Nicaragua. You can go on your own or with an organized tour. However, we recommend the latter option, as crossing the border is not easy. The guides already know how to walk right and save you a few hours of waiting.

From Panama, we head northwards to neighboring country of Costa Rica. First we choose a flight to the town of David, which is relatively close to the Costa Rica border, and the interstate flights are very convenient. From there we take the bus to the border, the journey with the locals is really cheerful, but we are well on the way - the small port town of Golfito. Just be careful that the customs officers do not forget to stamp your passport, which is a little messy. Otherwise, you will cause many problems. On the border there is a duty-free zone, many locals come here for shopping and there is really a great bustle, at the same time there is a lot of restaurants and various kiosks where you can refresh yourself.

Finally, we find ourselves in Nicaragua and curious about it. It is the largest country in Central America with a very diverse landscape. Nicaragua is known as the "Land of Lakes and Volcanoes" and is primarily divided into three areas: the Northeast Mountains, the Pacific Coast and the Caribbean Coast.
