West Sardinia is completely different from other parts. It is not mountainous, but it is rough, windy, wooded, almost flat and was a pleasant surprise for us at the end. I suddenly feel like I'm on another island, in another country.
Cremona is the place to nourish all your senses. We have seen and touched beautiful architectural jewels, listened to irresistible sounds of violin, and it is time to reward our taste buds. In the city, you do not just feel the scent of wood and see the colors of the violin workshops, but you can also smell the goodies they prepare in local taverns.
Who loves music must know this city. Today, we are going tp Cremona, the town famous for violins. We will visit several monuments and introduce some personalities, including the famous poet Vergilius who studied here.
When you happen to visit the Italian region of Lombardy, you must definitely visit Milan. However this region also hides other places and towns that are worth a visit. We went to the city with the highest medieval tower in Italy. Come with us to the historic center of the picturesque and serene town of Cremona.
In the lines to follow, we look at some of the most important churches of Piacenza that provide space for silent contemplation, a view of beautiful artworks and a shelter from hot sunshine. Historic palaces at the same time represent the wealth and glory of the city, as well as its exceptional spirit.
Milan is a city of religious history, as evidenced by the number of saints who have been here during their lives. But its greatest pride is undoubtedly the city center with the cathedral. Il Duomo di Milano can be found on all the pictures of the city, so when you visit Milan you shloud not miss this architectural gem. In the following lines we will go through not only her interior, but we will also visit the roof.
Once more we dive deep into this beautiful town of 20 thousand.
A hundred kilometers north of Rome lies the Umbrian town of Orvieto. It sits high above the valley of the Paglia River. The town was founded by the ancient Etruscans. It later became a significant fortress, especially due to its strategic location. Today it consists of two parts. The old town lies at higher altitude, the newer part lies in the valley and it is the place which you see first when you get off the train or park your car. To get to the historic center, you can use the funicular. Up there you will find most of the tourist attractions.
The city of fashion and design, finance, sports and nightlife. This is what attracts many to Milan. And once you get to this city even though your primary destination were landmarks, you can not miss out on this side, which makes it the richest city in the country.
Milan is one of those cities where you can spend a few days and still discover something new. Since the time of the Celts, the city has developed into a modern economic center of Italy. In its tangled streets, overcrowded with cars you occasionally find some interesting sight which maybe is not one of the top attractions of Milan, but as we we are there already, why not and make a stop for a while.
When you visit Italy, you have to taste some of the local delicious cuisine. But as food art also is an integral part of the soul of this country. Italians live with music, and the visit to the Apennine Peninsula can‘t not go without a seeing musical performance. And what is more than the world-famous La Scala opera house?
Milan is the second largest city in Italy and is known as the capital of fashion, sports, art, and business. We come here to complete our story about one of the most famous music composers ever - Giuseppe Verdi.
Italy offers many architectural gems that will take you to different periods of history - from antiquity to the present. Have you heard of a small town that looks like it was from the Middle Ages?
Have you ever wanted to come back in time, for example, into the so called "Dark" Middle Ages? Join us and see the gates of a picturesque town hidden between the fields of the Italian region Emilia-Romagna. Perhaps you have never heard of a town called Grazzano Visconti, but here you can see the Middle Ages and see if it was as dark as history is about it.
Whenever we go on vacation, one of the first things we look for is the highest mountain on the island. It is already our tradition to try to look at the highest point of the area. It will not be different today. We set off to the highest mountain in Sardinia, which is Punta la Marmora with a height of 1,834 m above sea level.
We have probably all heard it: "See Naples and die." Yes, Naples is beautiful, but it is also rough, authentic and dirty. Maybe that's why it will be etched under your skin. Half-dilapidated houses, smelly piles of garbage, but you go a little further and breathe the atmosphere of real Italy. Naples is considered the cradle of modern delicacy, which is nothing but pizza. We also plan to taste the real Neapolitan pizza.
Are you fascinated by the history, culture, nature or gastronomy of the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna? So add a piece of travel knowledge puzzle to visit the farm where the famous Parmigiano Reggiano cheese begins and ends.
If you have not resisted the tastes of visiting Parma, do not miss a visit to the farm, where you will be introduced to the process of parmesan, which is an essential part of Italian gastronomy. We are now going to one of these farms near Lesignano de 'Bagni, also known for its thermal springs.
Italy is a country where we can admire many churches from different periods. Parma itself has over sixty. The city offers visitors an architectural and gourmet experience, which certainly cannot do without visiting a church. The sacral buildings attract not only their spiritual atmosphere, but also their art. Come with us to visit a few of them and learn what art jewels are hiding under their vaults.
The town of bel-canta (beautiful singing), music and theater is not only for art lovers, but also for those who love the black horses under the hood. Since the end of the 19th century, Modena has been known as the center of mechanical engineering and subsequent production of well-known brands - Ferrari, De Tomaso, Pagani and Maserati. In the following lines, we invite you to visit the Museo Enzo Ferrari.
The beautiful natural environment, the beneficial effects of thermal springs, the vibrant nightlife in the streets and the beauty of the style of liberty and art deco are used in architecture - the spa town of Salsomaggiore Terme. Today we will finish exploring this town, looking at its symbol – the Terme Berzieri baths.
Italy is, among other things, the ideal destination for health tourism. The local spas are not just hot springs, they will always offer something extra, whether cultural activities or beautiful surroundings. Let's have a look around.
When during your travels you can combine pleasant with even more pleasant, so we will introduce you to the spa today. Between the many Italian spa towns where you can regenerate your soul and body, we chose Salsomaggiore Terme, located at the foot of the Apennines in the Emilia-Romagna region.
Once Tibur, now Tivoli. The city of sixty thousand is located approximately 30 kilometers east of Rome in the Sabine hills. Emperor Augustus had once enjoyed this place. He sought shelter here from hot summer in Rome.
We haven't left Busseto yet. We moved from its center to the outskirts of the city and to Sant'Agata three miles away. There is a farmhouse where fill the missing pieces of our knowledge of Verdi's life.
We were pondering if winter or early spring are suitable seasons for a stay in Rome. It turned out, it was a great choice. It is off main season, therefore accommodation, and flight tickets are notably cheaper. There are also lesser tourist crowds (yet in Vatican or at the main train station there are still many people there). Moreover, the weather is amazing. It was bit frosty in the morning but as the day goes on, the sun is more powerful. Temparatures then rise up to 18 °C so we wore just sweaters (some even wore T-shirts and shorts).
Being in Rome one should visit Vatican - the smallest country in the world. Millions of tourists visit it every year and sea its museums, the Sistine chapel, or St Peter's basilica. The entire land is surrouned by ramparts. The state of Vatican consists of the Vaticane gardens, St Peter's square, St Peter's basilica, and another significant structures.
During the last weeks we told you about the greatest biking routes or town walks. Today we leave our home country to travel to other European lands.
In the antiquity, Pisa was an important Roman port. However, the Arno River has silted up since. Now, there is a 10 kilometer gap between the city and the sea. It is very likely that you know Pisa as the home of the leaning tower. However, it is possible that you don't know that Campo Santo cemetary or local cathedral are other major sights around here.
In the first part on Pisa, we saw three main sights situated one next to another. This time we are not going far either.
Siena is situated in central Tuscany, the cradle of Reneissance. Its people are often considered a nation within a nation.
Last week we introduced you the Renaissance town of Siena and mentioned Florence was its great competitor. To make a better idea of Florence (or Firenze if you will), we together hit its streets today.
We return to Florence, Italy, to see other interesting places.
On this day we travel to Campania, Italy. Its mountainous landscape is situated in the south of the country and you will lvoe this region. The nature is amazing, history is rich, and food is addicting while everything is wrapped into the beautiful nature which is dotted with beautiful towns.
Today we go to a region where you will love to stay for as long as possible.
Spring seems to be a distant dream. Maybe it is worth traveling somewhere where it is warm. Therefore, we chose the town of Ostia to be the place of our article for today. In the past, the town was known as Rome's most important port. It is situated close from the Tyrrhean Sea. Now the town features the second largest excavation site in Italy.
Setting out from the birthplace of the famous music composer Giuseppe Verdi - Le Roncole - we go to the town Busseto, mere kilometers away. It played an important role not only in the musical but also personal life of the famous composer.
Italy offers many interesting sights to admire. People love the country for fashion, nature, cuisine, and art as well. Yet this country is also home to great music. Today we visit the small village of Le Roncole. One of world's most famous music composers – Giuseppe Verdi was born in this very village.
