Ruin Of Oparno Castle
Locality type: Castles
Continent: Europe
State (country): Czech republic
Place: Litoměřice district

The ruins of Gothic castle of Oparno could be found in picturesque Oparno Valley, interwoven with Milešov brook, located not far from the town of Lovosice.

This castle was founded at the end of 13th century, or at the beginning of 14th century, on rocky headland, by Smil of Vchynice. It was established on place of older fortification, known as „small castle“, and mentioned just in 1278, placed on merchant way connecting Prague with Saxony. It was a type of headland castle with walls. The expression „Oparno“ is mentioned for the first time in 1356 as a predicate of Smil of Vchynice, ancestor of Kinsky Parentage. Vchynice Parentage had this castle in possession till the beginning of 16th century, when new owners became Vřesovice Nobles and Bořita of Martinice Parentage.

Since 1520, the castle was not inhabited any more, and also a message of 1536 mentions Oparno as deserted place. Since that time-period, the castle became deserted in the face which can be seen at present. So, till now, there were preserved rests of periphery ramparts in rectangular form, vaulted cellar, north part of entry palace and ditches which served to defence. The ruin is free for access. You can enjoy a view towards Kletečná Hill and Oparno Valley.

There are several tourist trails, leading to the castle. Provided you do not wish to see castle ruins only, but you would like to walk through pleasant afforested valley, there is available a way from the community of Malé Žernoseky, where you can start your way from railway station, following yellow marked tourist trail up to Oparno Valley. From Císařský mlýn (Emperor´s Mill), you continue further, following green marked tourist trail, passing „plague stone“, mounting slowly upstairs to the ruin.

The second access possibility offers a way from the town of Lovosice (green marked tourist way), passing top of Lovoš Hill. From here, you mount, following blue marked trail, to Oparno castle. Nevertheless, this route could be more suitable for those who prefer more difficult terrains (this route is 7 kms long, and it is necessary to overcome mounting up to Lovoš Hill). Third possible route: drive by train from Lovosice, via Oparno Valley to railway stop Oparno. From here, you reach the castle, following green marked tourist route.
