Valečov castle
The castle is situated not far from the town of Mnichovo Hradiště. You reach this place by train, further you continue on foot. „Drábské světničky“ is a place, worth to visit, this locality is distant from Valečov castle a couple of kilometres only, and the path there leads throughout unique environment. The castle was established on a headland of sandstone base of Mužský Hill. It is our more complicated and most enlarged rock-castle and a typical product of Hussite wars. The oldest preserved document comes of first half of 14th century. At the beginning of 15th century, the castle was one of bastions of „Orphans“. In 1439, the castle burnt out, consequently many owners changed, and at the end of 17th century, the castle was joined to Mnichovo Hradiště dominion, and its fame fell down completely.
Its ruins were refuge place of poors, its stone rooms were inhabited even at the beginning of 20th century. The castle reconstruction works started in 1914, when Club of Bohemian Tourists had effected basic protection of a ruin, so castle stopped to be taken to pieces as a source of building material. In 1933, there was made statical protection, suitable railing installed and also guided tour service introduced.
Interesting thing:
Castle´s name is Bohemian - Valečov. It is a unique moment, as most of castles from the same time period are of German names.
