Dymokury - Pustý rybník (Desert pond)
The coutryside around Dymokury community is cultivated in agrarian way for more than 6000 years. There were grown cereals, hops and vines here. However, except Záhornice woodland, there remained a few forests only. In the community of Dymokury, there was made 180 metres deep sinking, where mineral water sprung. Anyway, this sinking was closed in 1971. In Dymokury, there are to be found 102 ponds altogether, and except ten ponds, all remaining were cancelled and changed into meadows and fields. Small Širany pond, now completely overgrown with reeds, had a surface 12 kms long, till 19th century.
Frequent road Poděbrady-Jičín leads across the pier of Pustý rybník (Desert Pond). The educational path was created here just in 1982. The readers who are interested in botanics, are recommended to visit this path in the spring. The soils are very nutritious, and in case, if they are not afforested, can offer very special plant-communions. There is placed also leafy wood with summer - and winter - oaks. There is to be found also ash-tree and common maple. The bank is hardly overgrown with plants and bushes and hardly accessible. The nests are built here by sea-gulls, moor-hens and ducks. In 1695, there was built, at the end of upper part of Pustý rybník (Desert Pond), Jakub Mill, and it belongs to oldest carpentered constructions in the region.
