Within 1270-1275, King Premysl Ottokar II. let to establish, along right bank of Labe (Elbe) river, King´s town of Nymburk. This place had suitable strategical position on a hillock, at Labe (Elbe) watering-place. Ancient way to the north, to the town of Zittau crossed here. The town offered a protection to Queen Elizabeth Premysl. So, King Jan Luxembourg (her husband), as well as King Charles IV., their son, gave the town special privileges for this service. During 30 years´war, Nymburk was damaged and destroyed several times.
Nevertheless, big development started at the end of 19th century. The town became very important railway junction, with workshops and engine sheds. The town constructed fortification belt, in direction to Labe (Elbe) river. A part of these was completely reconstructed at the beginning of 20th century. Two preserved ditches served for protection of the town, and were filled up with water from labe, in case of threatening. St.Jilji Gothic church forms town´s dominante. It was constructed from ryed bricks, forming various ornaments. This is quite unusual style in our Gothic art.
On opposite left bank of the river, there is situated an island, originally known as Topol (Poplar). In 19th century, there was created here English park, according to project of gardener F.Thomayer, with many exotic wooden trees. Educational path leads along, however, it was cancelled. Anyway, several tables with inscriptions remained.
