Smrk Look Out Tower
This look out tower is placed on the highest peak of Smrk (1124 metres), Czech part of Jizerské Mountains. The building itself is 20 metres high steel construction of 2003.
History
In 1892, Prussian tourists started to construct a look out tower on Stoh (Heap), 19 metres lower peak. Nevertheless, the inhabitants of the community of Nové Město pod Smrkem replied by construction of their own tower, on their part of the mountain. The building took probably seven weeks and its costs were 1683 goldens. It was open for public on 21st August 1892, so one month earlier as the construction of competition was finished. Frank Fritsch, local carpenter, belonged to their builders. He stayed here and offered small refreshment for visitors in a small cottage. Anyway, thanks to his carefull maintanace and thanks also to his successors, this wooden tower was in operation till 1946, when the neighbouring cottage (constructed in 1924) completely burned out. The tower which was not kept in good order, fell into decay subsequently and collapsed finally in 1960.
In 1992, there was created in Nové Město a „Society for Look Out Tower Renovation“. The construction of 20 metres high building, according to plans of architect Jan Duda, started in 2001. The costs mad CZK 3,6 millions. The tower was open for public on 18th September 2003.
