Tugendhat Villa
This villa in Brno is a work of German architect Ludwig Miese van der Rohe. The project was worked out in 1928, on request of Mr. and Mrs. Tugendhat. In 2001, Tugendhat Villa was written in UNESCO survey. This building is, together with German Pavillon in Barcelona, marked as the best pre-war work of Miese van der Rode. Generally known is, first of all, the glassed main living space with winter garden.
The Construction
The project (plan) was created just at the end of 1928. The construction was started in June 1929. As general supplier, the company of Maurice and Arthur Eisler was chosen for. On the building, there were participated many foreign as well as local companies. Nature material was imported from various parts of the world. The villa was terminated just in December 1930 and Mr. And Mrs.Tugendhat could move in.
History
In 1938, Mr. And Mrs. Tugendhat were forced to leave the villa, under threat of German expansion in Czechoslovakia. In autumn 1939, Gestapo seized the villa, and three years later, the building was written as a property of Third Reich. During the war, German constructor William Messerschmidt stayed there. When the war was over in 1945, Red Army troops seized the villa. So, the building served as accommodation place for Soviet soldiers. Later, in 1960, some voices started to protest, that the villa would have great importance as a monument of modern architecture.
Anyway, on 6th December 1969, the Villa was written into a State Survey of Cultural Monuments. Within 1980, the villa undergone complete reconstruction. However, all works were often criticized. Despite the fact that this criticism appears till now, building-historical investigation of 2001 refuses all this criticism.
Present time
At present, next reconstruction of this villa is being prepared, which could, at least partially, to rectify some errors from reconstruction works of 1980. The descendants of original owners asked recently for returning operations of the villa. They believe that, in case that the Villa will be in their ownership, so more suitable reconstruction will succeed to be effected, in order to get back its lost gloom and elegance to be returned.
