In an expressive decrease of Slanské Hills Range in East Slovakia, there is located the community of Slanec, where it is arising a hill with rests of Middle Age castle.

Starting point of walking up to the castle, there is a community of Slanec. The route leads from the church in village centre. You continue your walk to the north, passing last houses of the community, you follow red marked tourist trail. Here, you turn to the left and mount up to the col below the castle. Steep stony way leads you up to castle view. You will be probably surprised but the around view from the castle is really imposing. On southwest, you see Milič Mountain Range and Zemplín Hills, in eastern direction, East Slovakian low-lands, and in north a part of Slanske Hill Range. Slanec Castle was used for protection of salt magazines. However, its central tower burnt out in 1945, so only watch-tower „Nebojsa“ was preserved. The castle forms part of Slanec Castle Hill nature reservation. How to get to Slanec-village? You turn to the left from col below the castle and continue along main way leading to the church. Further ahead, you can admire Trstinov Lake, nature monument with many rare sorts of animals, living here.

Castle nucleus is formed with cylindrical tower and rest of rectangular palace with chapel. Its charm is reminded by preserved Gothic window and torso of some architectonical sections. Palace and tower were connected into one complex additionally, and strengthened with stone gallery. These buildings were surrounded (in rests) with preserved rampart of agricultural courtyard, controlling access way in a slope of castle hill. At bastion, situated in courtyard, there are to be found rests of circular cistern. Gothic gate enabled the entrance into courtyard, however, this building was not handed down to succeded generations.

Below a castle, in an expressive decrease of Slanec Hills, there is situated the community of Slanec. Its history is closely connected with a castle and their owners. Last proprietors became Forgác Parentage. They lived in a castle (chateau) in a community, not in the castle upstairs. However, the chateau was, together with a museum, destroyed in the course of the 2nd World War, Slanec Castle is situated in the south-east part of Slanske Hills, known as Milič. The massif crosses the border with Hungary, with its highest peak of Velky Milič (895 m). In eastern direction from this afforested hill, there are to be found two nature formed lakes, created by big landslips. Malá Izra lake could not be named as a lake, because it is slowly changing into marsh. Anyway, Izra is situated in nice forest milieu with relax possibilities. Thanks to landslips, the lake is located in the middle of beech-wood firest, on eastern slope of Velký Milič Hill.
