Šostýn castleŠostýn Castle is located on afforested hill, in a distance of 1,5 kms approx. from the town of Kopřivnice. It's foundation is mentioned to1293.

The name of castle-builder is unknown. Maybe, that this would be Huckeswagen Parentage (their castles in Starý Jičín and Hukvaldy are of similar construction) or Bruno of Schauenburg, Bishop of Olomouc. Similar face of Hukvaldy and Jičín reminds, first of all, very harmonious way in use of watch-tower (so called Bergfrit). Also Šostýn had such position, warningly aimed at strangers over the way across wooden Šostýn Castlebridge (it was drawbridge in its last part). Immediately after a gate, there was located inhabitated building and small courtyard. In south part of the courtyard, there was situated a palace, its ground-floor was preserved till now in a miraculous way, so this forms most preserved part of the castle. The internal castle was surrounded with a moat and powerful mound, including inevitable palisade. Before strangers reached this place, they had probably to overcome two fortificated hills, connecting bridges. Palace Šostýn Castlehad at least one room, heated up with owens, knight-hall with a pavement picturing oak-leaves motifs.

In 1404, the castle was besieged by Polish troops, and later, in 1420, it was conquested by Bishop´s troops. Nevertheless, they handed over this burned out and damaged castle to his legitimate owner. However, he did not repaired the castle any more. It is not excluded that the castle was conquested by Hussite troops, led by Jan Tovacovsky of Cimburk in 1427. Afterthat, the castle was deserted for ever and fell to ruins. Anyway, the exact date of Šostýn Castledefinitive castle-destruction is impossible to stipulate, and it did obviously not happened suddenly. First notice regarding a ruin comes of 1437. In the middle of 19th century, within ownership of country-squire Raška Parentage, some parts were removed, and its material used for construction of factory for earthern-ware.

Since 1930, Šostýn-castle undergone intensive archaeological and rescue investigations. Within this period, main part of the castle was uncovered, including groundfloor of great palace. Šostýn CastleAfter small intervals, the rescue investigations started since 1990. The town of Kopřivnice gave full support for next archaeological investigations, and the same financial help obtained rescue works which continue till now. In 1990, there was discovered and renewed Middle Age pond. On highest place of Šostýn-castle-ruin, there is located Žižka-linden-tree. The tree got this name by care of Czech Tourist Club in 1933. Its name got according to last  castle-owners, belonging to Moravian Hussite Nobility. The age of this tree is to be estimated for 200-250 years.
