CZ, the Jeseniky: Rejvic – The Highest Located Peat Bog in Moravia – VIDEO
The reserve is located at an altitude of 734 to 794 meters and include many rare plants and animals. The peat bog was here about 6 to 7 thousand years ago, at the end of the last ice age. The waterproof subsoil retains a great quantities of water, which is ideal for the growth of peat.
You can park your car in the village of Rejviz. From there starts a nature trail which leads to the Great Moss Pond. The last part of the trail goes directly over the peat bog along the wooden walkway.
The Great Moss Pond is also unique because water remains in a small elevated hole created on amassed of peat instead gathering in the lowest point in the peat bog. At the beginning of the wooden walkway you will find a clear explanation of how such a thing could have happened at all.
The reservation also includes Little Moss Pond. It is about a kilometer from the village of Rejvíz, but it is quite overgrown with vegetation and inaccessible to the public.
As for the rare plants, you there is much more than peat bog moss. You may also find, for example, carnivorous round-leaved sundew. In the wetlands around the peat bog itself grow, for example, orange lily or western marsh orchid. The fauna consists for example of alpine newt, Carpathian newt, northern bat, and Carpathian nuptials, northern bats, black woodpeckers, small owls and black storks.
You can join the trip not only with the visit to Jeseník, but also for the nearby Zlate Mountains. You can go along the red marked trail along the Cerna Opava, which originates here, and get to Vrbno pod Pradedem. The entire Protected Landscape Area of the Jeseniky mountain offers plenty of beautiful excursions - from relaxing walks to demanding outings rewarded with long views. This is why you can spend a few days here and there is still something to do.
